The Coopers community is fourth in line to gain a park and other recreational opportunities, County Parks and Recreation Coordinator Sue Yerkes told the Coopers Ruritan Club last week.
Yerkes told Ruritan members that currently, a park is in the works for district one, which is the Red Oak/Dortches area. The Bailey/Middlesex area, or district three, will be next in line to receive a park. Already, that area has formed a committee to look at grant opportunities and is in the process of developing a football program.

At this year's Relay for Life, students and staff at Rocky Mount Academy will be walking for one of their own.
Amelia Nash, a sixteen-year-old sophomore at the school, was diagnosed in October with cancer.
Amelia, a typical teenager, had just finished a volleyball game in late August 2006 when she went out with some friends to grab something to eat. While the group was eating, Amelia began to feel funny and suddenly blacked out and began having a seizure. She was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital, where she was released.

Spring Hope's Board met in a special recessed meeting Saturday morning to discuss a new pay and classification plan.
Town Manager John Holpe told board members that the new pay plan would be further discussed at the town's upcoming budget meeting but he wanted to present the plan to board members beforehand.

A Spring Hope man was arrested and charged with allegedly trafficking cocaine after an ongoing investigation by the Nash County Sheriff's Office.
According to Lt. Scott Parker, investigators went to Gary Russell Thompson's Spring Hope home to arrest him for the cocaine charge. While there, investigators located five pounds of marijuana buried in Thompson's yard as well as a half ounce of marijuana in the freezer.

The Northern Nash High School Mainstage Players presents the musical "Beauty and the Beast" this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and students and may be purchased from any cast member, at the door or by calling 937-5600. Nashville - Nancy Harper Evans, 87, passed away Monday, April 16, 2007. She was born October 4, 1919 to the late William and Nan Harper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Evans, and a brother, Robert Harper of Rocky Mount; half-brother, Edward Harper also of Rocky Mount.

SPRING HOPE, NC - Jarvis Donnie Edwards, 66 on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 completed his earthly journey and was called home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Randall Keith Simmons, 47, died Sunday, April 22, 2007. He was born January 15, 1960 in Nash County. Randall was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Vick Simmons.
HOLLISTER – Charlotte "Charlie" Davis Shaw, 71, died Friday, April 20, 2007. Funeral services will be held April 25 at 2pm at the Pine Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Alonzo West officiating. Burial followed in the White Rock Church Cemetery.
Ramona Braswell Silver Harvey, of Oxnard, California, beloved mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, returned to her heavenly home on April 5, 2007. She was born in Nash County, North Carolina on February 26, 1932, to the late Jonah Braswell and Calie Teenie Boose. After graduating from Nash County Training School in 1951, she settled in southern California.
MOMEYER - Charlie Howard Walston, 76, passed away April 15, 2007. Visitation was held Wednesday, April 18, 2007 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at The Momeyer Baptist Church.
Anne Crimi, 88, died on April 19, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Nick and her sisters, Mary and Millie.
ROCKY MOUNT – Walter W. "Brownie" Pitt, 92, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Nash General Hospital. Funeral services were held April 19 at Sunset Avenue Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Poole officiating. Burial followed at Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville.
NASHVILLE - Wilbur Jewel "Buddy" Coggin, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2007. He was born March 12, 1920 in Nash County.

Andy Mandell, or Mr. Diabetes, is on a 10,000 mile journey to raise awareness for diabetes. And he's walking every mile of it.
Last week, Mandell made it to Nashville, on the way to Raleigh, as part of his Wake Up and Walk Tour. Arriving in Nashville, Mandell had completed 8,338 miles of his 10,000 mile tour. North Carolina is the 30th state Mandell has walked through.

Recreation has become a hot topic in Nash County lately. The County's new Parks and Recreation Coordinator, Sue Yerkes, has been busy visiting various communities throughout the county asking what they'd like to see in their neighborhood.
Last year in North Carolina, 79 victims of domestic violence died.
According to the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence 2006 Summary of homicides, there were 35 child witnesses; 5 children murdered; 10 perpetrators under 25 years of age; 9 murder-suicides and 2 attempted murder-suicides. Out of the 79 people, 21 were males, 58 were females.
Janae Raquel Wilson was crowned Miss Jabberwock 2007 during the recent Jabberwock program presented by the Rocky Mount Deltas. The program was held at North Carolina Wesleyan College's Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.
Miss Jabberwock 2005, Amanda Marchelle Brake, a student at Elizabeth City State University, crowned Wilson. Jarren Webb, flutist from Rocky Mount High, serenaded her with "New England."

ROCKY MOUNT -- Building the Nash Central High softball program into a winner has been a satisfying -- yet sometimes frustrating -- proposition for head coach Gary Smith.
All along, Smith had circled the 2007 season on his calendar because the veteran mentor knew a strong incoming freshman class was destined to make an immediate impact.
