Nashville Elementary plans Hometown Heroes 5K

Nashville Elementary School is planning its second annual Hometown Heroes 5K for Saturday, September 16 but this year's event will include more family fun to go along with the run.

Carrie Morningstar, who serves as Chair of the Playground Committee, said this year's event will actually start on Friday, September 15 with an event on the school's ball field. That event will be held from 6 until 9 p.m.

"It's our last push to promote the race before it happens," Morningstar said.

The fun will continue after the race on Saturday with more family-friendly events such as inflatables and food trucks.

Morningstar said those events will take place of the school's annual Fall Festival. She said she hopes it will encourage the community to come out and get involved.

The race will be held on Saturday morning with a 5K and one mile run. Morningstar said this year's event will continue to honor hometown heroes, which is why the event is held around the September 11 date. The event will also be a fund raising event for the school's playground, which is currently in its second phase. Part of the second phase has already been installed.

Registration for the race is ongoing and can be done through the end of August at the discounted price of $25. Those who register in advance will get a free t-shirt.

"The price goes up at the end of August," Morningstar said.

This year, Nashville Elementary's own Cross Country Cardinals are planning to participate in the race.

"We're excited about the Cross Country Cardinals," Morningstar. "They're going to run the race again."

Morningstar said she was excited about this year's event and looked forward to making the event an annual one the community could look forward to.

In addition to supporting the school's playground, the race will also support the Nashville Police Department's HOPE initiative.

"Chief Bashore is really excited about that," Morningstar said.

The 5K race will begin on Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 a.m.
