A local church is celebrating its 117th anniversary.
St. James Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in Elm City recently celebrated its 117th anniversary with three evenings of worship services on March 8, 9 and 10. In addition, a community outreach day was held on Saturday, March 11.
The Community Day was a day of fun activities for adults and children, including games, educational activities, food and a cake cutting. The Coopers Volunteer Fire Department also visited the Community Day and discussed fire prevention and safety. Children were also given instructions on how the fire truck operates and were allowed to see the truck firsthand to view the equipment.
St. James Church of Christ had a humbe beginning. It was started in the home of Hopson Hunter, the sister of its founder, William E. Hopson. At that time, the church was known as the Piney Grove Disciples Church. The name was later changed to St. James Church of Christ and became the headquarter church for the Rocky Mount/Richmond, VA district of the Union Assembly Church of Christ Disciples of Christ.
The church's anniversary celebration was an opportunity for members to honor the legacy of its founder through worship and celebrating the history, past and present. It was also a time to learn more about the people who founded and led the church and about the events that have shaped its unique personality.
Elder Ardell Farmer, Jr. serves as the pastor of the church today.
