ROY ASBERRY COOPER, JR.

Roy Asberry Cooper, Jr. died peacefully at his home in Nashville, N.C. early Friday morning at the age of 87.  Born to Lois Clark Cooper and Roy Asberry Cooper, Sr., he graduated from Wake Forest College with a Bachelor of Science in 1949 and from the UNC School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1956.  Roy and his beloved wife Beverly, who died last November, were childhood sweethearts who wed in September of 1952.  Roy and Beverly lived in Nashville the rest of their lives.Roy was a successful attorney in Nash County having represented families over five generations.  Roy’s parents instilled in him a strong belief in the power of education and he was the first in his family to go to college.  Because of his attorney skills and the fact that he helped so many people, he was inducted by the North Carolina Bar Association into the General Practice Hall of Fame. Roy served his country for a brief time in the Navy.  Before he became an attorney, he worked with the N.C. Department of Revenue and as Deputy Clerk of Superior Court. After becoming a lawyer, he served as a Nash County prosecutor and practiced law for a brief time with Claude Abernathy. In 1960, he joined Milton Fields to form the law firm of Fields and Cooper which still has offices in both Nashville and Rocky Mount.  At the firm, he practiced with other lawyers including Leon Henderson, John Williford, Elizabeth Fairman, Mark Osterhout, Mark Edwards, Mike Gaynor and Roy’s two sons. Roy helped the community by serving on the original Board of Trustees of Nash General Hospital, as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member of Nashville Baptist Church, as Chairman of the Red Cross and Heart Association drives and as the Nash County campaign chairman for a number of gubernatorial candidates. He was involved significantly in the lives of his two sons through church activities, coaching little league and working with them on the farm.  When his sons became adults, he practiced law with them and helped them with their campaigns for public office. Roy loved traveling and exploring places he had read about including Australia, Alaska, Israel, Morocco and others.  In his retirement, he wrote a book about his life as a child growing up in the depression.  “Between the Creeks-My Sapony Adventures” was published in 2008 and Roy received positive comments from people all over the country who appreciated and identified with his stories. Roy leaves behind his son, Roy A. Cooper, III and his wife Kristin, his son, Pell C. Cooper and his wife Meredith, and four grandchildren, Hilary, Natalie, Claire and Marelle.  Roy also leaves behind many dear friends and extended family members.Visitation for friends and family was held at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville on Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Funeral services were  held at the Nashville Baptist Church on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.  Burial followed at Forest Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
