EDNA MAE CARROLL HYDE
The life of Mrs. Edna Mae Carroll Hyde came to its close with her family by her bedside at her home in Nashville, NC on September 8, 2011. Born on June 24, 1919 in Johnston County, North Carolina, she was the eldest living child of eleven children born unto Herman and Annie Kirks Carroll. She graduated from Archers Lodge High School in 1936 and was the class valedictorian. In 1937, Edna enrolled in the Park View School of Nursing in Rocky Mount, NC. She maintained many lifelong friendships from her time spent at Park View. One of Edna’s early achievements was being Park View’s first RN to make a perfect score on the NC state board examination in obstetrics in 1941. She always smiled when she spoke of her patients she had while she was OB Supervisor at Park View. Edna’s memory was unparalleled to any as she could tell you not only the date and time of a child’s birth; but her patients room number from more than seventy years ago.

While in nursing school, Edna met her future husband Allen Dunbar Hyde. She met him while he was waiting to see his nephew for the first time. She said, “he was the most handsome man she had ever seen”. They were married on April 25, 1942 at the home of Dr. Kincheloe in Rocky Mount. At that time, Mr. Hyde was a successful insurance salesman and Edna was OB Supervisor at Park View. Eventually, they moved to Nashville North Carolina where in 1945, they founded Nashville Furniture Company. At this time, furniture, like all commodities, was extremely hard to find to sell or buy. Edna went with Allen to Charlotte, High Point, Tryon and numerous other towns to find goods to sell. She worked with her husband not only in the furniture business, but also in the LP gas business. They established the first LP gas business in Nash County. Edna left private duty nursing so that she could assist her husband with his business ventures.

Edna’s most important role was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. She was extremely proud of her “boys” and was always interested in every aspect of their lives. A wonderful listener, she listened intently to the needs of her family and friends without passing judgment on anything she was told. She never repeated anything one told her in confidence. She was known for her keen interest in other people and their needs. Whenever she asked a friend or family member how they were doing; it was not simply a Southern form of etiquette, but rather Edna was genuinely interested in that person’s welfare. She often said that giving to others was one of her greatest pleasures. She understood “to whom much is given, much is expected.” In her 92 years, she gave unselfishly to others in her family, church, community, and nation.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Larry Allen Hyde and Joseph Carroll Hyde (Faye) both of Nashville, and her two grandsons Al (Barbara) and Joseph Allen Hyde of Nashville. She is also survived by her sister Maxie Womack, and brothers Billy Carroll of Willow Springs, NC and Harold Carroll (Bobbie) Carroll of Orangeburg, SC. Edna was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years as well as her sisters; Grace Barnes and Sue Jones, and her brother; Russell Carroll.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorials, if desired, may be made to Friends of Nash General Hospice, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC. The family received family and friends at the home of Al and Barbara Hyde at 117 West Washington Street Nashville, NC on Saturday September 10, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. The Rev. Jason Gault  presided over the funeral at the Nashville Baptist Church on Sunday September 11, 2011 at 3 p.m. A private entombment was held at Forest Hills Cemetery following the service.
