LOVE & COMPASSION vs HATE & DISGUST
"I hate people." and "People suck." We hear it all the time. Because of owner surrenders or people not taking care of their pets. We even see statements like "The owners should be euthanized." Where is the kindness and love we give to pets? Could it be that the people need saving as much as the pets? Where is the empathy?

Intersections: God and Life

Jesus tells the story of a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus. He contrasts the lives of these two men and the differences could not be more striking.
'Father Abraham!' he called out, 'Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!' Son, Abraham said, '"Remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony."

New life stages are sometimes beyond our control

I enjoy the TV commercials from Progressive Insurance where a counselor tries to help people from turning into their parents.
I've certainly been talking about how impatient people have gotten on the highway. It's true I've been accused of driving like an old man by some people close to me, but we have to have the context that: 1) One of them drives like an insane person 2) One of them has been questioned about the unusual wear pattern on their tires because of rapid speeds 3) One drives in a big city.

Google and Facebook have enormous economic and political power in society - especially over the news industry. Many ask if they have played a role in the misinformation that erodes our free press and plagues our democracy.
Google and Facebook have a duopoly of the distribution of digital news content, which drives people to their platforms where they make money.

Reader elaborates on reasons for lack of patriotism in response to column

Dear Editor: A recent Soapbox column written around the time of Independence Day suggested that a lack of patriotism (love of country) was responsible for many of our problems.
It's that, but it's more subtle than that. I see it as a lack of appreciation for the uniqueness that is America.
