Hurricanes have Christians asking why

It's second nature to wonder from time to time why God allows us to suffer the way we do. It is often asked especially now when so many hurricanes seem to hit the southern United States. One that did the most damage, Katrina, hit New Orleans back in 2005. It's one that we will all remember because of the loss of life and damage that was caused. How many times did we hear it said, "How could a loving God allow such death and destruction?"

Intersections: God and Life

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'" -- Matthew 7:21-23

Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together

There is a need for clarity from the church to the world. There was in the book of Acts and there still is for the church in the year 2021.
In the post ascension, post Pentecost, heads on fire, world of the early church, they immediately encountered a problem of perception.
What's the perception the world had of who the church is? A bunch of drunks stuttering off some odd languages.

Science doesn't get to add a planet

I'll admit I'm still salty about Pluto being demoted as a planet.
It happened 15 years ago and I'd mostly gotten over it. After all, I haven't been into space stuff nearly as much since "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" went off the air in the 1980s.
However, those feelings have been stirred back up.

Protect your loved ones from grandparent scams

Over the past year and a half of this pandemic, we've all been more worried than ever about our loved ones' health and safety. Unfortunately, at the same time, scammers are looking for ways to take our money. These criminals exploit fake familial bonds by tricking our grandparents and elderly loved ones. This year alone, North Carolinians have reported losing more than $150,000 to grandparent scams, and we know that's just the tip of the iceberg. Here's what you need to know about grandparent scams, and how to help your loved ones avoid them.

Millenials are going to outnumber the baby boomers

Dear Editor:
Don't look now, but the generation of people known as the millenials has supplanted the previously untouchable baby boom generation in sheer size.
That's right, there are more millenials out there running around than there ever were baby boomers.

RJ SHOWS THE WAY. Northern Nash running back RJ Loring churns through the Bunn defense during last Friday night's Big East Conference prep football contest at historic Death Valley on the NNHS campus.
NNHS PULLS AWAY

RED OAK -- In an instant -- and by mere inches -- the complexion of last Friday's Big East Conference football game between host Northern Nash and Bunn changed permanently in the third period of action.
To that point, the contest had been competitive, and BHS had used a defensive touchdown to claw back to within six points of the favored Knights.

What A Big Victory!!!

FRANKLINTON -- As an understudy of the legendary B.W. Holt, Chris Lee has been known to pull out one of his mentor's plays at the most opportune time.
Such was the case last Friday as Lee -- the former head coach at Louisburg High School -- brought his Bulldogs to Franklinton for a key Big East Conference football contest.
Nash Central trailed late in the game, only to recover a key fumble and score to come within one point with two minutes remaining -- pending the extra point.

THE 2-A TITANS

RED OAK -- The competitive Big East Conference volleyball scene has featured an upside-down scenario during the 2021 campaign.
Under normal circumstances, the higher-classification schools usually control the proceedings when a split league is formed -- such was what happened in the off-season to the newfangled Class 2/3-A Big East.

Southern rolls past R. Rapids

STANHOPE -- Even with their team boasting an undefeated record, members of the Southern Nash High School football coaching staff would tell you that the Firebirds had yet to put everything together in one game this season -- until last Friday night.
That's when the Firebirds roared to a 56-14 home decision over previously unbeaten Roanoke Rapids in a Big East Conference showdown that most experts deemed would be much closer.

SOUTHERN NASH'S FRANK GONZALEZ
Round One: SN

FRANKLINTON -- It didn't take too long into the Big East Conference boys soccer schedule to determine that the two matchups between Southern Nash and Franklinton would probably determine the league's regular season champion.
Certainly, FHS and Southern seemed a cut above the rest of the league, and their recent rivalry was destined to continue this fall with a pair of hotly contested events.
