Council okays second tree inspection

A second risk assessment of trees on Washington Street could take place as soon as June 14.
Nashville's Town Council unanimously approved hiring Historic Tree Care out of Durham to assess 21 trees along Washington Street.
Koy Worrell, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, told council members that staff had reached out to five arborists requesting quotes after the board's May 25 meeting.

Nashville, Rocky Mount hold Memorial Day events

Two local Memorial Day traditions returned this year including a Sunday evening service at Forest Hill Cemetery hosted by Nashville American Legion Post 110 and a service hosted Monday by The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash & Edgecombe Counties at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount.
Over 700 flags were placed on the graves of soldiers at Forest Hill Cemetery to commemorate Memorial Day.

Nashville approves $14.8 million budget

Nashville residents expressed disdain over the town's response to reported issues in town.
Residents spoke out during the public comment portion of the board's meeting on Tuesday night.
James Baker, who lives on East Green Street, said he feels there's a lack of communication in town.
Baker said the street sign on his road is wrong.

Nashville hires collection agency for delinquent bills

The Town of Nashville will use a collection agency to collect unpaid utility bills, property taxes and personal property taxes.
Council members unanimously voted to enter into a contract with LifeQuest Services at the recommendation of Finance Director Samantha Sanchez.
Sanchez said proposals were requested from third party collection services for the collection of delinquent utilities, property taxes and miscellaneous debts.

New Coronavirus cases decrease in Nash County

Nash County Health Director Bill Hill reported Tuesday Nash County continues to see fewer new cases of COVID-19.
From May 27 to June 1, the county reported 20 new cases, eight of those are hospitalized with one in ICU, and one on a ventilator.
Hill said numbers are getting better, "I think that indicates we're moving in the right direction," he said.

Tax preparer to serve time for filing false returns

A Rocky Mount woman was sentenced recently to twenty-four (24) months imprisonment and ordered to pay $229,000 in restitution for committing conspiracy to prepare and file false tax returns.
According to court documents, Priscilla Evans, 65 years old, conspired with others to file false tax returns for the 2011 through 2016 tax years for clients of Community Tax Services LLC located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Cancer patients in need of blood donations

The American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have teamed up this June to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time and help ensure loved ones have the strength and support they need as they undergo cancer treatment.
According to the American Cancer Society, many patient visits and procedures were forced to delay or cancel early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. With procedures resuming, blood donations are critical for cancer treatments.

School system committee recommends policies on drones, crowdfunding

Rules regarding the use of drones was one of two policies the Nash County Public Schools (NCPS) Board of Education Policy Committee approved this week. They both will be recommended to the full board at their next meeting in June. If finally adopted by the board, the school system's drone policy will be in addition to state law already established by the N.C. General Assembly. Tyler and Sarah Joyner Payne of Morehead City, NC announce the birth of their daughter, Marley Jordan Payne. She was born March 29, 2021 at Cartaret Health Care in Morehead City. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 inches long.
Maternal grandparents are Thomas and Melissa Joyner of Rocky Mount. Maternal great-grandparents are Hank and Linda Bennett of Wilson.

Nashville student makes Dean's List at University of Mount Union

The University of Mount Union has announced that Christopher Pietryk, of Nashville, has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2021 semester.
Pietryk was one of 644 students named to the Dean's List. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of traditionally graded coursework while achieving a grade point average of 3.550 or better with no letter grade below a B.

NC School of Banking announces local grads

The class of 2020 has graduated from the 84th North Carolina School of Banking (NCSB). NCSB is one of the oldest state banking association banking schools in the nation. The curriculum is oriented to expand the skills and abilities of middle managers and prospective managers.
Bankers who enroll in the school spend a week each August for four consecutive years to receive training in a college setting.

Nashville student named to President's at SNHU

Elizabeth Alford of Nashville has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's Winter 2021 President's List. The winter term runs from January to May.
Full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above are named to the President's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits; undergraduate day students must earn 12 credits in fall or spring semester, and online students must earn 12 credits in either EW1 & EW2, EW3 & EW4, or EW5 & EW6.

Southern Gospel songwriter, Phil Cross, tells a great story about growing up in a small northwestern Georgia town. One of his neighbors - a pastor as I recall - had a small AM radio transmitter in his home. Every morning, he would awaken early, turn the transmitter on, and deliver his sunrise sermon to his listeners. He would always begin with "Hello world". Cross later reflected on that memory.

Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together

There's a story in the Bible about an 8 year old boy who becomes King. His name was Josiah. He was a young lad who, "did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left." (2 Kings 22:2).
Years later, Josiah gave instructions for there to be a remodel of the temple and upon the remodel, Hilikiah the High Priest, found the Book of the Law. They had lost it. In the temple.

It's that time of year when Americans prepare for vacation season, but also when history lovers and patriots have much to consider.
In the course of about a month, we will celebrate Memorial Day, recognize the anniversary of D-Day, mark Flag Day and celebrate the birth of our nation on July Fourth.
These are days that should give us a few minutes to pause and consider all the things we've been blessed with as a country.

Toastmasters Club thrives despite pandemic

Dear Editor:
Businesses and companies weren't the only affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many social and civic clubs came to a screeching halt. The Rocky Mount Toastmasters Club #8957 however quickly regrouped and began hosting its monthly meetings virtually and installed a new Board, hosted an open house, welcomed new members and became an award winning club!

Bishops' campaign concludes

MARIETTA, OHIO -- The 17th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College baseball team saw its terrific 33-win season come to an end last Saturday afternoon as the Bishops dropped their second game of the NCAA Regional 7-3 to 6th-seeded Penn State-Behrend in the Buckeye State.
Behrend, out of Erie, Pa., got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first off Bishop starter CJ DiBenedetto (5-3).

NCSU topped in ACC finale

CHARLOTTE -- The No. 15-ranked North Carolina State University baseball team (30-17) came up short in a tightly-contested Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title game with Duke (32-20), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Truist Field Downtown Charlotte.
The loss snapped a 67-game streak of the Wolfpack suffering a shutout, as the last time came on May 24, 2019 against Florida State in the ACC Championship (11-0 result).

ZEBULON - The Carolina Mudcats capped a six-game sweep of the visiting Kannapolis Cannon Ballers after taking both games of Sunday's diamond doubleheader 5-0 and 9-5 at Five County Stadium.
Brendan Murphy tossed a complete game shutout in game one and Joe Gray Jr. hit a go-ahead grand slam while homering in both games as the Mudcats won their sixth straight contest.
