Nashville Junction rezoning is approved

Three parcels currently owned by Nashville Building Supply have been rezoned for office and institutional use.
Nashville's Town Council approved the rezoning on Tuesday night at their regular meeting, paving the way for what could eventually be known as the Nashville Junction.
The request was from Michael Hurt, a Franklin County developer who wishes to purchase the 2.92 acres of property and redevelop it.

Boddie Street plan on hold

A decision to convert South Boddie Street into a one-way street to allow for more parking was tabled by Nashville's Town Council on Tuesday night.
A public hearing was held on the request, which several comments in opposition to the idea.
The opposition, coupled with the fact that residential property owners along Boddie were not notified of the public hearing, led council members to table to request. In addition, new conversations with Superior Court Judge Quentin Sumner also led to the item being tabled.

COVID-19 vaccines available for anyone 18 years or older

The Nash County Health Department is now offering COVID-19 vaccinations to anyone 18 years old or older.
Nash County Health Director Bill Hill said the county is moving forward with offering vaccines to those in Group 5. Those in Group 5 became eligible for vaccines on Wednesday, April 7.
"We're getting people vaccinated more quickly than we predicted," Hill said. "We want to get those shots in arms."

Nash County 4-H hosts livestock show & sale

An over 80 year tradition continued this week as the annual Eastern Carolina 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held at the Eastern Carolina Livestock Arena in Rocky Mount.
The event typically brings over 150 youth from Nash, Halifax and Wilson Counties, who showcase months of hard work with their steers, lambs, goats and pigs.

Cummins pledges $42 million plant investment

Nash County Commissioners pledged support for a long-time Rocky Mount industry on Monday by approving a significant inducement agreement to help with the company's expansion plans.
Cummins Inc. announced plans to invest over $40 million to modernize its facilities at the Rocky Mount Engine Plant in Whitakers.

After five years of research, photography and personal challenges, Nashville's legendary photographer and photojournalist Ben Casey released his latest book Sound People amidst a global pandemic.
Casey, who now resides in his native land, Pamlico County, found it necessary to self publish due to circumstances caused by COVID-19.

Jesus went to hell and back for us

Dr. Luke tells us that Jesus died around 3:00 on a Friday afternoon, just a few hours before the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath.
Funerals were prohibited on the Sabbath, so Jesus' supporters didn't have the luxury of time with which to plan a service. They had to hustle just to bury him before sunset.

41st Jabberwock Scholarship Program set for April 11th

The Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will present its 41st Jabberwock Scholarship Program on April 11, 2021 at 4 p.m. virtually featuring the theme "Pearls on the Rise...Destined to be Great!"
The Jabberwock originated in 1925 as a fundraiser to underwrite scholarships and to encourage participants to develop amateur talents.

Student earns scholarship at RMA

Isabella Nicole Daza, daughter of Hernan Daza and Tanya Perez-Daza, has been awarded this year's Ann MacPherson Weaver Memorial Scholarship at Rocky Mount Academy. Currently an 8th grader at Red Oak Middle School, Daza will attend RMA in the fall on a full-tuition scholarship, valued at approximately $48,000 over four years.
The Weaver Scholarship was established at Rocky Mount Academy in 1986 in memory of a 1984 RMA graduate who had lost her life to cancer earlier that year.

Turning 16 during a global pandemic

Bring on the Chinese food.
We get to pick our meal on birthdays and I've already made my choice for Hing Ta in Rocky Mount. I've told my dad to see if chicken fried rice can be purchased by the gallon.
It's been a crazy year, so we definitely need to celebrate. I really thought I'd be getting my driver's license this week, but COVID has ruined that.
