Nashville's utility expenses increase

Nashville's revenues have fared well during the COVID-19 pandemic, the town's finance director reported on Tuesday.
Finance Director Samantha Sanchez provided a report on the town's financial status to Nashville Council Members during the board's annual budget retreat.
Sanchez told council members that last year at this time, the COVID pandemic was just getting started and there was a lot of uncertainty on how revenues would do.

Steel shortage delays school construction

The rising cost of steel will cause delays in the construction of the new Red Oak Elementary School.
The Board of Education met last Thursday to award the construction contract to H.G. Reynolds Company in the amount of $16,864,000.
The approval came with some hiccups, however.

COVID spread slows in Nash

Nash County continues to show decreasing trends in numbers of COVID-19 cases reported each day as well as hospitalizations.
The decreasing trends moved Nash County back to the yellow tier after spending over two months in the red.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services updated the COVID-19 County Alert System last week.

NPD investigates stabbing

Nashville Police are investigating an assault on Brake Street that resulted in a man being stabbed.
Officers responded to the 1100 block of Brake Street around 6:43 p.m. last Thursday, March 4. When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old male victim with two laceration wounds to his upper back. The victim was conscious, alert and talking.

Study, research aims to reduce flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers will begin sharing information and soliciting input in an effort to mitigate flooding along the Tar-Pamlico River Basin.
The Corps' Pittsburgh District is set to host a virtual public meeting for Nashville, Nash County and the City of Rocky Mount on March 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will have the option to attend the meeting in-person, during the same time, at the Nashville Council Chambers, 114 West Church Street, Nashville, NC 27856. Face masks are required.

Traffic stop leads to chase

A traffic stop in Spring Hope on Sunday led to a high speed chase that ended with the suspect crashing in Wake County.
Officer Lucas, of the Spring Hope Police Department, attempted to stop a grey 2009 Mazda CX9 around 11:35 Sunday, March 7 for speeding in a careless and reckless manner on W Nash Street.

Nashville to host Easter Egg "Drop"

Nashville's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is planning an Easter Egg Drop for residents on March 27.
Koy Worrell, director of the department, said due to COVID-19, the town isn't able to host its annual Easter egg hunt this year. However, Worrell added, he wanted to still be able to do something fun for residents during the Easter holiday.

Birth Announcement

Joshua and Jessica Sewell of Rocky Mount announce the birth of their son, Carter Paul Sewell, born January 22, 2021. He weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and was 19 inches long. Carter has an older brother Hayden Sewell who is four years-old. Maternal grandparents are Carlton and Elaine Bone of Nashville. Paternal grandmother is Donna Langley White of Emerald Isle, NC.

A year ago, many things in the world paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the need for blood never stopped. Today blood donations are just as essential, and the American Red Cross urges individuals who are healthy to make an appointment to donate blood.

Virtual session offered for healthy food access

The Healthy Food Access Mapping (Healthy FAM) project, a regional effort to improve understanding and access to fresh locally grown food, is inviting all residents to participate in virtual Community Engagement Sessions in March. All residents of Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, And Wilson Counties interested in increasing access to healthy, local food in their communities are encouraged to participate.

Rocky Mount facilities to open under pandemic guidelines

Governor Roy Cooper's Executive Order No. 195, which eases some restrictions on business and gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, has afforded the city of Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department facilities to begin operating under certain guidelines.
The South Rocky Mount and Booker T. Washington Community centers, Rocky Mount Senior Center, and Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences will begin operating at reduced capacity on Monday, March 15.

Ivy League educator, author slated for NCWC Commencement speaker

Brandon P. Fleming will be North Carolina Wesleyan College's Spring 2021 Commencement speaker. Fleming is the Assistant Coach of Debate at Harvard University, as well as Founder/CEO of the Harvard Diversity Project.
At the age of 26, he was recruited to join the Harvard Debate Council faculty after coaching The Ron Clark Academy middle school debate team in a high school tournament to an unprecedented, undefeated record.

The Nash UNC Health Care Foundation will host a Spring Drive-in concert Sunday, April 25 from 2-5 p.m. at Nash Community College Continuing Education Parking Lot to benefit the new inpatient food pantry at Nash UNC Health Care.
Sunday Funday with the Embers serves as the foundation's first event in 2021.

Northern Pulls Away

RED OAK -- Bragging rights were on the line last Friday night when the Northern Nash Knights and Nash Central Bulldogs squared off on the gridiron in the 2021 spring football season edition of the "Battle of the Bridge".
Despite a solid first half from Nash Central, it was Northern Nash that was able to pick up the win in front of its home crowd last Friday night, holding the Bulldogs to just six points in the second half en route to a 38-13 beatdown of its crosstown rival.

Wesleyan claims key conquest

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College baseball team used a Jackson Murray grand slam and a Davie Morgan walk-off RBI double to knock off second-ranked Randolph-Macon College 8-7 in 10 innings in game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at Bauer Field on the NCWC campus.
The thrilling win was the Bishops' 7th win in their past 8 games as they improve to 8-2 on the year.
