FARM CITY HONORS

The good food and camaraderie were missing but Nash County Cooperative Extension still celebrated agriculture last month at the annual Farm City Breakfast.
This year's event was held virtually due to COVID-19 but the agenda was mainly the same.
"We celebrate the land and what it represents, the sustenance and provision of it, the stewardship of it, all of these things," Parker Philips, Chair of the Nash County Extension Advisory Council, said at the start of the event.

Nashville businessman passes away

A longtime and well-known businessman in Nashville has passed away.
Jimmie Hinton passed away last Thursday, December 10 after a battle with COVID-19. He was 71 years old.
Hinton was the son of J.L. and Ruby Mae Hinton and a lifelong resident of Nashville.

Prison reports 103 Covid cases

Vaccinations for COVID-19 began in the United States this week but Nash County Health Director Bill Hill said it could still be a few more months before Nash County residents get a chance to get the vaccine.
Hill said on Monday, December 14, the day the first vaccines were administered, that critical health care workers and EMS workers will be first in line to get the vaccine. After that, it would likely be given to staff and residents at congregate living facilities.

Arrington takes oath for commissioner seat

Nash County's newest commissioner was sworn in last Monday morning at the start of the board's regular December meeting.
Marvin Arrington was sworn in by Halifax County Judge Teresa Raquel Robinson Freeman.
Arrington said he chose Freeman because she attended the daycare he owned many years ago.

Town of Red Oak swears in new board member

A brief meeting of the Red Oak Town Council included the swearing in of new member Sandra Russ.
Mayor Levell Langley administered the oath of office to Russ at the start of the meeting.
Russ is serving the remaining term of late commissioner Barbara High Tyre, who passed away unexpectedly in October. Tyre's term ends in December 2021.

DSS employee retires after 45 years of service

A 45-year employee with the Nash County Department of Social Services will officially retire on December 31.
Sarah Hill was recognized by Nash County Commissioners last Monday, December 7 for her many years of dedication and service to the county.
Social Services Director Amy Pridgen-Hamlett told Nash County Commissioners that Hill had began with social services on August 18, 1975, primarily working with adult services.

Santa cruised around Nashville last Thursday compliments of Nashville's police and fire departments. Santa visited all neighborhoods and communities in town passing out candy. The event was coordinated by Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.

Long-time Nashville employees retire

Nashville's Town Council recently honored the service of a dozen employees and said farewell to two others.
Long-time employees Tina Price and Thurman Evans were presented certificates of retirement at the board's regular meeting on Tuesday, December 1.
"It's a sad time for us but an exciting time for two people," Mayor Brenda Brown said.
Both Price and Evans will retire this month.

Wilson man faces drug charges in Nash County

A Wilson man was arrested last week for outstanding drug warrants and firearms charges.
The arrest of Orlando Dickens, 49, stemmed from an ongoing narcotics investigation which began earlier this year.
On January 22, 2020, a traffic stop was conducted on Dickens for a traffic violation on US 264 Eastbound at the 27 mile marker.

Agreement offers path from NCC to Barton

Nash Community College recently announced a new articulation agreement signed with Barton College during the 2020 fall semester to provide a seamless pathway for qualified transfer students to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Justice Administration.
"We are proud to sign articulation agreements with two of our closest partner community colleges, Nash Community College and Wilson Community College," noted Dr. Gary Daynes, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Rocky Mount receives nearly $13 million in grants

The City of Rocky Mount was a four-time recipient of grant funding by the North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA)
The RIA approved 30 grant requests to local governments totaling $12,969,015, Governor Roy Cooper recently announced. The requests include commitments to create a total of 839 jobs, 464 of which were previously announced. The public investment in these projects will attract more than $528 million in private investment.

Women in Action of Red Oak Baptist Church participated in the Adopt-A-Family program through My Sister's House. They were able to provide gifts for a family with 2 children. What joy it is each year for the missions group as they imagine the happy faces on Christmas! This is an annual project that Women in Action support.
The Adult II Sunday School Class of Red Oak Baptist Church was once again able to adopt 2 children in the Nash County Foster Care Program for Christmas.

Mrs. Morgan Dollar of Southern Nash Middle School was recognized by the Nash County Board of Education as an "Exceptional Teacher" this past week. Ms. Rebecca Gallagher and media coordinator Mrs. Sharon Stroh-Cock have created an art program entitled "STEAMing Into Art". They have been awarded a $3000 grant that will be used to offer art students the opportunity to create, explore, and collaborate while building and programming robots.

Plaque in honor of Marsigli brothers placed at hospital

UNC Orthopedics at Nash honored the careers of Dr. Adolfo Marsigli and Dr. Eduardo Marsigli by dedicating a fund in their honor and placing a plaque in their name on the orthopedic wing of the fourth floor in Nash General Hospital.
A small dedication ceremony took place on the fourth floor of the hospital where colleagues from UNC Orthopedics at Nash and Nash UNC Health Care honored the Marsigli brothers for their many contributions to the hospital, practice and community.

Red Oak Area Historic Preservation Society

Members of the Red Oak Area Historic Preservation Society Board of Directors recently led Dr. David Batie (fourth from left), associate professor of construction management at East Carolina University, on a tour of the Red Oak Teacherage. Renovations continue to take place on the 9,000-square-foot structure, which was built in 1914 and sits across from Red Oak Elementary School. Future plans for the facility include community and small business use.

The awards program, created by the Office of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Carolina's most dedicated volunteers. Dear Editor: On December 1, 2020, Nash Country Sheriff's Department lost another Guardian-of-Peace. Deputy Sheriff Jared M. Allison was an Army veteran, a husband, a father and only 26 years old. His death in the line-of-duty was the third in Nash County in nine years.

COVID certainly hasn't been good to anyone. Lives have been affected in all sorts of ways and people are hurting.

NCHS falls to Farmville

ROCKY MOUNT -- A rocky start to league play within the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference continued for the Nash Central High School girls volleyball team last Thursday as the Lady Bulldogs fell in three quick sets to the Farmville Central Jaguars despite playing in their home gymnasium.
Entering last Thursday's matchup between conference foes, NCHS head coach Heather Thompson's group of spikers were looking to get back into the win column after a disappointing loss at North Johnston.

Bishops defeat rival Piedmont

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team used a terrific offensive showing to move past USA South foe Piedmont College (Ga.) 91-78 at home last Wednesday afternoon.
The win was Wesleyan's 2nd of the year as the Bishops improved to 2-0 vs. D-3 teams and 2-2 overall.

Local recording artist releases debut album

A local recording artist released his debut album at an outdoor CD release party in Nashville, NC on November 21st.
Chandler James, a native of Nashville, brought together a who's who of famous musicians for his debut collection of songs. Recorded in Nashville, TN during the lock down, the new music includes a blend of old school country and upbeat rhythm and blues while featuring Brent Mason (Alan Jackson) and Carl Verheyen (Supertramp) on guitar(s) and Keith Carlock (Steely Dan) on drums.
