Nash reports seven deaths in one week

With positive cases of COVID-19 continuing to rise throughout North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper announced last Wednesday that North Carolina will remain in phase three for three more weeks as health officials continue to monitor the state's viral trends.
"As this pandemic continues, I know it's difficult and tiring to keep up our guard, especially when we're gathered with people we love," Cooper said. "But it's necessary. No one wants to spread COVID-19 accidentally to friends or family, so we must keep prevention at the forefront.

HUNTING DOGS ~ The season is open for some species!!! We may not agree with the practice of hunting with dogs, but we have to act appropriately when we come across one of the hounds. There will be hounds showing up everywhere. Owners will be happy to come get their dogs if you call them, the dogs will have tags. These dogs have homes, they are fed and taken care of. They can look skinny after a couple days of running lost without food. Yes, it can happen that fast. Help them get home.

Walk in fear of the Lord but don't be afraid of Him

Several years ago, my wife had severe abdominal pains. They became so severe, I had to take her to the emergency room for treatment. One of the nurses charged with her care, a Christian, had a Chinese tattoo on his arm. Robbie asked him what it meant. The nurse replied, "He who walks with no fear."
I noticed a cross on his neck and thought about the irony.

Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together

Fire. There are few things in the world that can captivate me like a good ole fire in the fall here in eastern North Carolina. I would even say that a cool crisp night with leaves all over the ground, a roaring fire and good friends surrounding me is a glimpse of glory.
Simply put, I love fires. I would also simply say, as the church, we should love fire.

Intersections: God and Life

I've been writing about issues dealing with the relationship between the local church and the communities in which they exist. This week, I want to address the issue of change. For example, since we walked the aisle of a church and talked to the preacher about asking "Jesus into our heart," got baptized, and officially became a "member" of the church, what difference has been made in us?

First time voting brings back memories, cautions

It was the election of 2004 when I walked into Samaria Baptist Church's family life center to cast my ballot. My young daughter was holding my hand, always interested in the world's dealings.
"I'm here to vote for George Washington!" she shouted as we stepped through the foyer into the voting hall.
I wish, I thought at the time.

Barbara Tyre was admired by many, including myself

Red Oak, Nash County and North Carolina, well really the whole world, lost a very special person recently.
Barbara High Tyre.
Her unexpected, and untimely, death will be felt for a long time by many, including myself.
I think about her and the life she led and there's no way I can adequately put into words the impact she had on so many.

Stolen valor unfortunately happens

Dear Editor: Stolen valor happens, but it's a mystery as to why it happens.
Being a veteran gives one a certain self-satisfaction maybe, but besides that, the rewards of service are few.
"Vets" rate a discount in certain quarters sometimes, but other non-vet types are extended discounts too, like senior citizens for instance.

A TURN OF EVENTS

ROCKY MOUNT -- One week after putting together an explosive offensive performance worthy of a spot in the national record books, the Faith Christian Patriots experienced the opposite end of the gridiron spectrum.
In an important showdown for playoff qualifying and positioning, the Patriots couldn't consistently find the end zone Monday during a 33-18 home loss to rival Arendell Parrott in North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association eight-man football action on the FCS campus.
