Nashville council oks 2nd fire station

Nashville's Town Council has approved a capital project ordinance for a second fire station, which is slated to be built in the eastern part of town.
Approval of the project ordinance was subject to Nash County Commissioners approving the town's request to increase the NS Gulley Fire Ad Valorem Tax from 12 to 15 cents per $100. Commissioners approved their budget on June 15, which included the fire district tax increase.

PIPELINE NIXED

Members of Nash County Stop the Pipeline breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday afternoon, as Duke Energy and Dominion Energy announced the cancellation of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.
Representatives cited "ongoing delays and increasing cost uncertainty which threaten the economic viability of the project."

County asks citizens to wear face coverings

Nash County Commissioners are recommending residents and visitors to the county wear a face covering when in public places.
Commissioners met on Wednesday morning and approved a resolution making the recommendation. The resolution also recommends that residents maintain the recommended social distance, practice proper hand washing procedures and use hand sanitizer frequently.

Rezoning approved in split vote Tuesday

In a split vote, Nashville's Town Council agreed to change the zoning of 9.36 acres of land behind Food Lion from a business zone to a residential zone.
Council had voted last month to table a decision on the matter to allow more time for residents to provide input.
The request was to rezone around 9.36 acres on South Eastpointe Avenue from B-1 to R-4.

Citizen proposes 2nd amendment resolution

A Spring Hope man is hoping Nash County Commissioners will support a resolution aimed at upholding the constitutions.
Allen Chesser presented the resolution to commissioners on Monday during the board's regular meeting.
Chesser said he first drafted the resolution back in February during a growing movement to implement additional red flag gun laws. Chesser said he wanted to bring those actions to light, and hoped commissioners would show support for the second and 14th amendments.

Nashville native takes part in national recruitment campaign

A Nashville native is talking about her experiences in the military to try and encourage others to join.
Army Command Sgt. Maj. Lynice Thorpe-Noel was a part of a nationwide United States Army National Hiring Days campaign, which was launched last week.
The campaign was the Army's first all-virtual recruiting effort whose goal was to hire 10,000 new soldiers from June 30 through July 2.

NC Wesleyan hires new Dean of Students

North Carolina Wesleyan College recently welcomed Dr. Jason Modlin as its new Dean of Students. Modlin comes to Wesleyan from Louisburg College, where he previously served as Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students.
Modlin touts a 25-year career in small, private higher education environments.

NCC educator noted as advanced level CISCO instructor

Anthony Lucas, Nash Community College Computer Information Technologies Instructor and Subject Matter Expert, was recognized as an Advanced Level CISCO Instructor by the CISCO Networking Academy for the 2019 academic year.
Th​e​ award recognizes Lucas' achievements as one of the top 25 percent of instructors globally ​in​ student feedback and performance.

NCC annouces first Vet Tech graduates

Nash Community College has announced its first graduating class of the Veterinary Medical Technology program.
Coursework in the Vet Tech program began in 2017 in response to workforce needs expressed by the local veterinary community. Students officially entered the college's first cohort of the Associate in Applied Science degree program in 2018.

NCWC waives ACT/SAT requirements

North Carolina Wesleyan's Admission Office has announced it will waive ACT/SAT admission requirements, and in some cases, waiving student enrollment fees for the fall 2020 semester. In addition, Wesleyan's Financial Aid Office has set aside funds to assist with the financial needs of current and prospective students that have been impacted by COVID-19.

Operation Fan Heat Relief available in Nash County

Nash County Senior Center's Operation Fan Heat Relief Program applications are now available.
The program is provided through donations that are given through Dominion Resource and Duke Energy Progress and distributed through the Area Agency on Aging.
Applications will be accepted over the phone beginning July 6, 2020.

"Tree Campuses and their students set examples for not only their student bodies but the surrounding communities showcasing how trees create a healthier environment," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation.

NBC offers virtual Staycation Bible School

Nashville Baptist Church will be hosting a Virtual VBS each Wednesday starting July 22 and ending on August 5th. The craft pick-up date is Tuesday, July 21st in the afternoon for parents or grandparents to pick up craft supplies for the Virtual VBS so they will have everything on hand. Participants are required to register so the church will have an idea of how many packets to prepare and to share the link to participate.

NCC announces Dean's List, honor rolls

Nash Community College recently announced the following students to the Dean's List and Honor Roll for the 2020 Spring Semester. Like many other colleges, NCC moved to remote learning in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average (all A's) while taking 12 or more semester hours.

True leadership brings all to the table

With all that's been going on since early March, it's sometimes hard to focus on day-to-day things right here in our community.
For instance, local meetings, government and most civic organizations, are still being held virtually.
Our local governments are still meeting in the same rooms, but with limited seating due to social distancing.

A Huge Rivalry Not Renewed

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash and Bunn have undertaken one of the area's best non-conference football rivalries over the past two decades and beyond.
The clubs against each other some through the years before adopting a home-and-home two-year contract that has been renewed every time since the mid-2000s.
But Bunn has opted not to renew the contract, at least for the 2021 and 2022 campaigns.

Patriots' honorees finalized

ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian School has released its athletic award winners from the 2019-20 calendar year.
Logan Ayers was tabbed as the Female Athlete of the Year, while Hobart Brantley was saluted as the Male Athlete of the Year.
Brantley will continue his athletic career as a baseball player at North Carolina Wesleyan College, and Ayers will join the softball program at William Peace University.

Racing action last Saturday

LITTLETON -- Fuses were short but tensions were high last Saturday night as drivers and fans from every direction gathered at Halifax County Motor Speedway for a special Independence Day edition of racing in the FUEL Late Model Series I-95 Challenge.
After the pre-race ceremonies, which included the traditional prayer and National Anthem, as well as a celebrational firework show concluded, the 16-car Pure Stock V8 field headed to the starting grid to begin the night's contests.

FAYETTEVILLE -- A total of 184 Huntingdon College student-athletes were recognized with the release of the USA South Academic All-Conference team on Wednesday.
The student-athletes, representing each of Huntingdon's 18 athletic programs, were among the 1,702 USA South student-athletes named to the team.
