Nash denies Sunday morning alcohol sales

Nash County Commissioners turned down a request to allow the sale of alcohol on Sunday mornings.
Commissioner Chair Robbie Davis brought the request before commissioners last Monday at the board's regular meeting. Davis said he had received requests from two people over the past few weeks and suggesting they submit the request in writing.

Hobbs files for town council seat

The former finance director for Nash County has filed for a seat on Nashville's Town Council.
Lynne Hobbs filed on Tuesday for one of the two available seats on Nashville's board, joining incumbents Louise Hinton and Charles Taylor, who have also filed for re-election to their seats.

JVC hosts flag retirement

They were worn, tattered and faded but once flew proudly over someone's home, business, government office, school or some other entity.
On Saturday, around 2,000 flags were properly retired during a ceremony hosted by the Joint Veterans Committee (JVC).
Eight burn barrels were set up at on the grounds of the Oak Level Ruritan Club and after a solemn ceremony, the flags were placed one by one in the barrels.

Suspects nabbed for armed robbery

Two brothers were arrested and charged with robbing a Dortches gas station last week.
The Kangaroo Express in Dortches was robbed on Monday, July 8 by two unknown subjects.
During the course of an investigation, investigators with the Nash County Sheriff's Office disseminated still images of the suspects with surrounding law enforcement agencies to see if anyone could identify the suspects.

MSD looks at restructuring

Nashville's Municipal Service District Advisory Board (MSD) is looking at restructuring how it operates and is seeking guidance from NC Main Street and the Rural Planning Center.
Planning Director Julie Spriggs presented a proposal to the MSD Board on Tuesday afternoon during a regular meeting of the board.

Momeyer Baptist celebrates 100th

A series of revivals over 100 years ago led to what is now known as Momeyer Baptist Church.
The church celebrated its Centennial on Sunday with a special Homecoming service. In April, the church had another 100-year celebration, hosting an "Old Fashioned Sunday" where attendees dressed in their best 1919 attire.

Summer Reading Program ends Saturday

Cooley Library will wrap up its Summer Reading Program on Saturday with a finale party from 12 until 2:30.
Library Director Emily Enderle said participation this year has been higher than last year, with a total of 231 people participating. Of those numbers, 121 are kids, 44 are teens and 66 are adults.

Red Oak Clerk earns state designation award

Tracy Shearin, Town Clerk for Red Oak, was recently awarded the designation of North Carolina Certified Municipal Clerk.
Shearin received the designation from the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks along with the School of Government of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

County honors NCC president

Nash County Commissioners paid tribute to Dr. Bill Carver and his many years of service to Nash Community College at their regular monthly meeting last Monday.
Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution honoring Carver's service and presented him with a framed copy of the resolution.
Carver has worked at the college since September 1987, when he started as the college's Small Business Director.

Elm City man receives 13 years in prison for drug conspiracy

An Elm City man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for drug conspiracy.
Rodney Durrell Thomas, 21, of Elm City, was sentenced on Tuesday, July 16 in federal court by United States District Court Judge James C. Dever III.
Thomas, also known as "Lil Bruh," was sentenced to 156 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Nash okays inducement for RM company

Nash County Commissioners approved an inducement agreement this past Monday for an unnamed company, hoping it will choose to locate in Rocky Mount.
The company's name has not been released but in the agreement, the company is referred to as "Project Tire" and promises a total of 96 jobs over a three-year period.

50TH ANNIVERSARY

Thaxton and Bobbie Jean Rowland, of Nashville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on June 29 at Oak Level Ruritan Club in Nashville. They were married on July 5th 1969 in Swelton Heights Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. A surprise anniversary party was given by children and grandchildren. They have two sons Jamie and wife Susie and Timothy and wife Sarah. They also have six grandchildren.

Zakiyah Henry recently graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Physics. Henry graduated Summa Cum Laude.

The Women in Action missions group at Red Oak Baptist Church met on Tuesday, July 8 at the church for their monthly meeting. They enjoyed a hot dog supper and missions program. Plans were made to collect school supplies for an area school.

Saga of refrigerator parts is like a sitcom

My daughter Holly often says she feels like she lives in a real life sitcom.
I'm not sure how I feel about that, especially considering the quality of sitcoms these days, but I know where she's coming from. We do seem to run across fictional-type events in our everyday life.

Change can be a good thing, especially during elections

Filing for municipal elections will soon end and I'm a bit surprised at the slate of folks on the list. Well, maybe not those on the list but more so, those NOT on the list.
It was around a year and a half ago in Nashville that I remember several people saying these words at town council meetings and throughout town......"We'll remember your actions when election time comes."

THE FITTING FINALE

GREENSBORO -- Certainly, there was a sense of finality on several fronts for Darius Edmundson and Robbie Kennedy at Monday's East-West All-Star Boys Basketball Game at the historic Greensboro Coliseum.
The contest was slated to be the last-ever hoops competition for Edmundson, who starred this past season at Southern Nash High School under Kennedy's direction.

Road Win For NRST

ROCKY MOUNT -- Nash Rec made a short journey last Thursday to continue its long regular season winning streak in the Nash-Halifax Swim League.
The Sharks remained undefeated by securing a 596-279 victory over homestanding Westridge Swim Club in Rocky Mount.
Nash Rec can wrap up its perfect regular season campaign next Thursday when the Sharks entertain Roanoke Valley at the NRST Pool.

RED OAK -- Nash County Parks and Rec -- and Ennis Park -- hosted a pair of Statewide Athletics Committee (SWAC) Sectional Tournaments last weekend.
Action was as sizzling as temperatures as six teams each took part in Boys Coach-Pitch and 9-10 events at the Ennis Park Fields.
Nash County's Parks and Rec was represented by All-Star teams in both the C-P and 9-10 brackets, while Nashville fielding a squad in the Coach-Pitch Tournament.

Wilmington edges 'Cats

WILMINGTON, DEL. -- Ryan Aguilar hit a solo home run in the first to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games, but a three-run homer from Kyle Isbel in the third led the host Wilmington Blue Rocks to a series clinching 3-2 victory versus the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium.
Noah Zavolas started for Carolina (13-12, 52-42) and ended up with the loss after allowing Isbel's homer in the third.
