Oak Level continues annexation fight
Rocky Mount City Council members again heard the pleas of Oak Level residents who asked the city to reconsider its annexation plans.
A public hearing was held last Wednesday night on changes made at the request of Judge Jerry Tillet, Superior Court Judge.
The Oak Level Community Against Forced Annexation, or OLCAFA, has been fighting the city’s annexation for over a year. The City of Rocky approved an annexation of over 1,700 acres of land into its city limits on December 18 of 2008. A majority of that land is in the Oak Level community. Soon after Rocky Mount approved the annexation, OLCAFA filed a lawsuit. More ...

Additional arrests made through Operation Punisher
The Narcotics Unit of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office continues making arrests each day in Operation: Punisher, an operation targeting drug dealers throughout Nash County.
In week two of phase three of the operation, four Nashville residents were arrested and charged with various drug violations.
As part of the first phases of Operation: Punisher, the Sheriff’s Office offered assistance for those with problems with prescription drugs. Billboards were displayed in Rocky Mount with a confidential phone number to the Beacon Center. More ...

Longtime Spring Hope Commissioner turns over seat
Spring Hope Commissioner Marion Clark sat on the Board of Commissioners for the last time Monday night as she turned her seat over to newcomer Drew Griffin.
Clark has served on Spring Hope’s Board of Commissioners since 1999. In 10 years, she has only missed two meetings. That dedication, and her outstanding service to the town, led Mayor Buddy Gwaltney to present Clark with a plaque from both the town and its Board of Commissioners at the start of Monday night’s regular meeting. Within a few minutes of the meeting, Griffin was sworn in and took over as a commissioner for the town. More ...

Downtown Nashville parking may change
At the request of downtown merchants, Nashville will be making changes to its downtown parking.
Town Manager Preston Mitchell provided council members with some of those changes at the regular meeting earlier this month.
Mitchell said throughout the downtown area, some parking spots are two-hour parking zones while others are one-hour zones. The changes will make the parking zones more uniform throughout. More ...

Zalzneck ends term as Nash Health Care Board Chairman
After three years as Chairman of the Board for Nash Health Care Systems, Robert “Ziggy” Zalzneck handed down the title to Michael Bryant at its last regular board meeting for 2009.
Zalzneck has served on the Board of Commissioners for eight years. He became chairman in 2007 and will serve the 2010 year as a board member.

Woman charged with filing false report
A Nashville County woman was charged with filing a false police report after calling 9-1-1 and reporting that someone had robbed her outside of Kerr Drug in Nashville.
Nashville Police Chief Bill Creech said Amy Williams, of Nashville, said two men robbed her in the parking lot of the drug store.
“It came in as an armed robbery and when we got there the victim was gone,” Creech said. “She reported initially that she had been robbed by two guys.” More ...

Man stabbed during attempted robbery
Two Wilson men were arrested and charged with stabbing a Nash County man after trying to rob him last Saturday night.
According to Lt. Joey Corbett, of Nashville’s Police Department, Erica Letchworth and Jonathan Taylor Oneal, who both live just outside of Nashville, allegedly went to Rocky Mount to a clinic and met a man there who tried to sell them a handgun.
“They had never crossed paths before and didn’t know each other from Adam,” Corbett said. More ...

County receives clean audit report
Nash County received a clean audit report for 2008-2009 at its regular meeting last Monday morning.
The report, presented by Bryan Starnes of Martin Starnes and Associates, shows a $2.1 million decrease in revenues from 2008 to 2009 and a $130,00 increase in expenditures.
Starnes said the audit reflects the recession the country has been experiencing but added that the county has been able to maintain. More ...

In 2001, Al and Barbara Hyde purchased one of Nashville’s historic treasures, the Ricks-Strickland house. 
Since that time, they have been quite busy restoring this Greek Revival home which is the sister home to Cooley Manor (Bissette-Gassaway) home. 
Al’s great-great aunt and uncle, Temperance and Fletcher Buchannan Ricks constructed their home around 1890.  More ...

NCC announces Nurse Aide I and II graduates
Nash Community College recently announced Nurse Aide I and II graduates. The Nurse Aide I class introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients in a health care setting. Nurse Aide I graduates are eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP or NACES) Examination. The Nurse Aide II class prepares students to perform more complex skills for patients regardless of the setting. Nurse Aide II graduates are eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing.

Wow! What a week Castalia Baptist had!  We finished our toy ministry with 54 families being served. That’s a total of 144 children receiving gifts because many of you donated to our new ministry.  There were 10 new decisions to receive Jesus into their life with nine rededications.  Many blessings were received both with those coming in for assistance as well as the 34 volunteers that worked all week long to make everything run smoothly.  This week we have two nights of Christmas gatherings with the children returning for cookies and juice and also to wrap a gift for their mom, dad or grandma. More ...

Staff members who worked at the Edgecombe-Nash Mental Health Center in the 1960’s-70’s gathered at the Nashville Community Center for a pig pickin’ on November 7, 2009. The committee, Cheryl Coppedge, Carolyn Turner, Ed English and David Coulthard offered a short program at which time they honored Dr. Billy Royal for his contributions for the founding of ENMHC. Many of the staff shared memories from the memorable era. The ENMHC became The Beacon Center on July 1, 2008 due to mental health reform in North Carolina.

“Joy” was the theme for the third Sunday in Advent.  The meditation was read by Dianne and Ricky Tucker, who lit the Advent candle.  The adult choir presented the Christmas cantata titled “Gather at the Manger’, written by Dennis and Nan Allen.  It was directed by Pastor Whitehouse and narrated by Lynn Griffin.  The solo was sung by Karen Edwards.  Other choir members were Kristina Griffin, JoAnn Blankenship, Patricia Wood, Ann Browder, Fran Bunn, Barbara Jones, Marta Whitehouse, Barbara Hardison, Lawrence Edwards, Jerry Hobgood, David Griffin and Linwood May.  Beverly Wilson talked to the children about the meaning of “joy”.  She gave them ornaments for their Christmas tree that had symbols for Christmas, and the word “Joy”. More ...

Each year, I tell myself that I’m going to put my Christmas tree up early. And each year, as Thanksgiving approaches, I start making plans as to when I’m going to actually leave the house and go and get my tree.
This year, I decided on Black Friday. I would already be out and about and what better day to buy a tree?

After reading Mr. Blackwell’s comments in the newspaper, I just wonder how many others on the Council hold the same opinions.

PINETOPS -- Nash Central High School’s boys basketball team got 22 points from Dominique Holloway as the Bulldogs beat SouthWest Edgecombe 56-51 last Tuesday night on the road.
The Bulldogs got out to a 15-8 lead in the first period but trailed 23-21 at the half. Nash Central trailed by two at the end of three quarters, but they outscored the Cougars 20-13 in the final period to get the victory. More ...

GREENSBORO -- Freshman Brad Scott, a former standout at Nash Central High School, recently completed his first season as a member of the Guilford College football team.
Scott, a 6-2, 165-pound kicker for the Quakers, played in all 10 games for Guilford this season. Scott earned the starting placekicker’s job in training camp and finished the campaign with a league-high 10 field goals in 16 attempts -- the most by a Quakers’ kicker since 2003. More ...
