Revaluation notices go out Friday
Nash County property owners can expect to receive revaluation notices soon, as notices are scheduled to go in the mail on Friday.
During the Board of Commissioner’s regular meeting on Monday, January 5, Tax Administrator Gene Rountree said most property values will see an increase of around 22 percent.
“Not everybody’s going to see a 22 percent increase,” Rountree said. “There’s going to be some that are way up and some that are way down.There’s a big gamut of increases that go along with this.”  More ...

Austin Taylor - Firefighter of the Year
FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR
Volunteer Fire Engineer Austin Taylor was named Nashville’s 2008 Firefighter of the Year Award.
Taylor was recognized at the department’s annual banquet on December 20. Taylor was voted into Nashville’s Fire Department as a volunteer member on February 15, 1996. He is a member of the confined space rescue team, the trench rescue team and also a member of the Nashville Fire District Auxiliary.  More ...

Spring Hope receives grant
The Town of Spring Hope recently received word they had been approved for a $485,000 grant to help make improvements to its wastewater treatment plant.
The grant, awarded by The Rural Center, will be used to take out the trickling filter and put in activated sludge at the treatment plant. The town has been working for over a year on making improvements to its wastewater system. More ...

NRMPS Superintendent defends discipline policies
Racial tensions again ran high Monday as members of the community expressed their concerns over the way school officials handled grievances about discipline situations. More than two dozen community members were present at the January school board meeting in order to support public comments by former school board member Shelly Willingham, Rev. Thomas Walker, and Hubert Pope.
Willingham spoke on behalf of an organization called Citizens for Educational and Economic Justice. Willingham expressed concern for the unequal treatment of minorities in the schools, especially in matters of discipline, and accused school officials of failing to investigate incidents and of ignoring parental concerns. More ...

Castalia holds park info session
Castalia Commissioners hosted a park information session on Thursday, January 8, 2009, as it prepares to submit a roughly $75,000 grant application to help defray the cost of the land. Nash County Parks and Recreation Director Sue Yerkes was on hand to explain the current status of the park plans and to field questions from the roughly two dozen citizens in attendance. More ...

Boys and Girls Club National Fine Arts Exhibit
Montrel Scott and Ke’ziah Hollingsworth (L-R), both members of Nashville’s Boys and Girls Club, look at artwork during an art show at the Rocky Mount Boys and Girls Club on Friday. The show featured artwork from all five clubs in Nash and Edgecombe Counties and is part of the annual Boys and Girls Club National Fine Arts Exhibit. Ten winning pieces from the local clubs will move on to regionals and from there, winners move on to a national competition. Darlene Williams is the art teacher for club members. More ...

National Board Certified teachers recognized
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Board of Education recently honored thirteen educators who achieved the prestigious status of National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). The members of the Class of 2008 bring the total NRMPS National Board Certified Teachers to 141 (108 currently employed by Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools).
National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. Teachers and counselors achieve certification by completing a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes between one and three years to accomplish. More ...

Bailey man arrested on outstanding drug charges
A three-month investigation led to the arrest of a Bailey man last week for outstanding drug charges.
Moises Segura, of 12119 Brock Circle, in Bailey was served with outstanding drug warrants and placed in the Nash County Jail under a $300,000 secured bond. More ...

Carolina Insulation Company relocates to site in Elm City
An insulation company has relocated to the former Fawn Electronics site in Elm City.
Carolina Insulation Company, a mechanical and industrial insulation contractor and supplier of pipe, duct, tanks and equipment insulation for the HVAC and plumbing industry as well as the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, constructed a new facility on the former Fawn Electronics site on NC 97. The company brings 80 employees with the operation with plans to hire an additional 20 by Spring.  More ...

Wildlife Resources Commission to hold public hearing at NCC
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hold a public hearing for comments on proposed changes to 83 hunting, fishing and trapping regulations on January 22 at 7 p.m., in Brown Auditorium at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount.
North Carolina General Statutes charge the Commission with stewardship of all the state’s wildlife resources. Through hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations, the Commission works to conserve and sustain these resources and to provide more opportunities for hunting and fishing, promote hunter recruitment and retention and enhance sportsmen’s experience in the field. More ...

Nashville native named recipient of Women Extraordinaire award
Elizabeth Davenport Scott, a former resident of Nashville has been selected as a recipient for Business Leader’s 2008 Women Extraordinaire award.
Scott is among 10 winners who were recognized at an awards luncheon held at the newly opened Raleigh Convention Center. Winners underwent a rigorous selection process and were chosen based upon a blind nomination review process from over 200 nominations. Scott, a partner in the Williams Mullin’s Litigation section, is the first Williams Mullen attorney to receive the honor.  More ...

Wesleyan receives $10,000 grant from DeLeon Carter Foundation
North Carolina Wesleyan College recently received a grant of $10,000 from the DeLeon Carter Foundation to support the expansion and renovation of the college’s Elizabeth Braswell Pearsall Library. The $4 million project, which is expected to be completed during Wesleyan’s spring semester, will nearly double the size of the existing library.  More ...

Happy retirement to my uncle
Many Americans dream of working 20 to 30 years and then being able to retire at around 55-years-old. For a majority of people, I imagine that’s a dream that may never happen. Retirement is a thing of the past it seems. But some stories do have a happy ending.
My uncle, who is in his 50’s, recently retired. He worked many years for the government and to this day, I still don’t know what he did for a living. It’s top secret. I just know that he speaks Russian very well.  More ...

NC Highway Patrol advises drivers to be cautious during winter weather
Dear Editor:
The winter months ahead are now upon us and the North Carolina Highway Patrol encourages drivers to be especially cautious when weather conditions deteriorate. Citizens should consider temperatures at or below freezing to be dangerous due to the fact that any amount of moisture on bridges and overpasses can instantly glaze over into a thin sheet of ice that can send a vehicle into an uncontrollable skid. Even small rural bridges and portions of highways in which a culvert runs underneath the road pose a considerable risk in freezing temperatures. More ...

RED OAK -- After a pair of round-robin meets, the NEW-6 Conference was supposed to have its pecking order intact for the upcoming Class 3-A State Wrestling Playoffs.
That’s not exactly the way things have turned out as the league currently boasts one of its most balanced lineups, including co-leaders Rocky Mount and Nash Central.
