NASHVILLE - A local woman is dead after a fire that started in the kitchen of her home.

Men injured in head-on collision
NASHVILLE - A Nashville man was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital by helicopter after a head on collision last Wednesday afternoon.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Anthony Dwayne Harris, was traveling east on U.S. 64 Alternate when he crossed the center line. Harris swerved back in his lane but became out of control and collided with a van traveling west.  More ...

Gwinn earns state Caretaker of the Year award
NASHVILLE - Roger Gwinn hustled about the office at Brookway Village Apartments Friday afternoon, getting chairs, greeting guests and towards the end, even serving guest's food. Even though Gwinn was off the clock, he meandered around making sure everyone else was comfortable.

Nashville water operators to take on Castalia's duties
Castalia Mayor Elene Leonard announced at Castalia's April business meeting that the duties of the Castalia water operator would be contracted out to Nashville water operators for the next several months, due to the recent firing of Castalia Water Operator Ricky Bass. N-RMS board approves land easement and sale
SWIFT CREEK — In its work session held at Swift Creek Elementary School on Monday night, the Nash-Rocky Mount (N-RMS) board of education unanimously approved a request from the City of Rocky Mount for an easement on the Winstead Avenue Elementary School property to extend Westminster Drive to Winstead Avenue. This year, a featured event during National Boys & Girls Clubs Week (March 25-31) was the center of attention for many art aficionados in the Rocky Mount area. The Image Makers National Photography Program and Contest was on display at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties. Nash Soil and Water 2007 Poster & Essay Contest Winners
The annual Nash Soil and Water 2007 Poster and Essay Contest Awards Program was held Thursday, March 29 at the Nash County Agriculture Center. Local youth were recognized for their posters and essays on natural resources and conservation.

The program recognized third, fourth and fifth grade winners from each Nash County School as well as a county wide winner in each grade level.  More ...

70th Eastern Carolina 4-H Meat Animal Show and Sale
Several Nash County 4-Her's received top honors at the 70th annual Eastern Carolina 4-H Meat and Animal Show and Sale.

The event was held April 11 and 12 at the Eastern Carolina Agriculture and Education Center in Tarboro. Over 150 youth from Nash, Halifax and Edgecombe County participated in the event. Forty-six of these were clover buds (youth ages 5-8 years). The clover buds complete a noncompetitive goat project.  More ...

Twenty one Cub Scouts from Pack 148 met at the Community Building on Saturday, March 3 for their annual pinewood derby race.

Local company makes donation to park
RED OAK - The Red Oak - Dortches Park may still be a year away but the large soccer/multipurpose field already has a name: The Roto Rooter Field.

Roto Rooter, a plumbing business off Old Carriage Road, has given the first $10,000 donation to the Park.The company will give $2,500 this year and will give the rest in $2,500 increments until 2010. The naming rights will last for 20 years.  More ...

RMSH science team competes at ECU
The Science Olympiad Team of Rocky Mount High School fared well at the Regional Science Olympiad competition held at East Carolina University, placing third overall. Twenty-three students were part of the RMHS Science Olympiad team. Competition categories included Entomology, Physics, Health Sciences, Astronomy, Chemistry and Oceanography. Students will now travel to the North Carolina State Science Olympiad Finals at North Carolina State University on April 21.  More ...

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties want to get the word out about proper dental care. That's the message from Theresa Shaw Executive Director for the local organization. One sexual assault victim is one too many, let's all speak out
Every year, thousands of North Carolinians – women, men and children – are victimized by sexual violence. Last year, according to the N.C. Council for Women, North Carolina's rape crisis centers provided assistance to over 7,000 victims of sexual assault. Sexual violence not only affects those who are victims, but it impacts families, friends, churches, communities and our society as a whole. According to S. Martin & S. Cloutier (1999), in North Carolina, one in five women have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. More ...

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount's Brian Goodwin was not a happy camper entering the Gryphons' championship matchup with Southern Nash at the Rocky Mount Gryphons Easter Baseball Tournament last Tuesday at Gryphon Stadium.

The sophomore center fielder had a 12-game hitting streak snapped in the Gryphons' 6-0 semifinal win over Roanoke Rapids the night before. He was determined to get a new run of hits started against the Firebirds. More ...
