New businesses slated for Nashville
NASHVILLE - Two new businesses are looking to locate in Nashville.

Smithfield's Chicken 'N Barbecue submitted site plans last week to build on a one-acre parcel in front of Food Lion. Murphy USA is looking to build on another acre parcel in front of Food Lion but a site plan has yet to be filed. A meeting with town officials and engineers of Murphy's is planned for later this week. More ...

REMEMBERING ERIC
SPRING HOPE - A local family is grieving the loss of their son, husband, brother and friend.

Staff Sgt. Eric Reid Vick, 25, of Spring Hope, was killed with three others when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device on April 1. The soldiers were responding to another incident when they were killed.

Vick's parents said the yard was flooded with cars after the news of Eric's death hit the community.  More ...

Since 2005, the North Carolina Highway Patrol has been going full throttle to get rid of illegal drag racing throughout Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax and Pitt Counties. Pridgen celebrates 100 years
William Tiny Pridgen celebrated two special days on Sunday: Easter and his 100th birthday.

Family and friends gathered at the Oak Level Ruritan Club Saturday to celebrate Pridgen's special day.

Pridgen was born and raised in Nash County, in the Momeyer area. "That's where I went to school back in the teens," Pridgen recalled. "I've lived on a farm all my life."  More ...

Easley has been disappointing during UNC deal
There is a moment in the classic film Happy Gilmore that is so pertinent to the biggest story in our area so far this year, the possibility of turning N. C. Wesleyan College into UNC-Rocky Mount.

It's the part where Happy decides to join the pro golf tour and finds out that he has to have a caddy. So, he goes out into the parking lot, finds a goofy looking teenager and hires him to caddy. He gives the new hire one important instruction, "Your job is to keep me from doing something stupid." More ...

We'll all truly miss our friend, Frank Hedgepeth
one of Nashville's kindest and most big hearted citizens, Frank Hedgepeth. Frank passed away last Wednesday due to an extended illness of cancer. During his fight against the dreadful disease, he kept an unbelievable optimistic attitude, continued to work at his insurance office and continued supporting the community.  More ...

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount and Southern Nash faced off Tuesday evening for the championship of the 31st Annual Rocky Mount Gryphons Easter Baseball Tournament.

FRANKLINTON -- The unofficial championship match of the Brassfield Commercial Shamrock Classic officially settled nothing last Thursday at Franklinton High School.

Three weeks ago, tourney host Franklinton and Nash Central reached the finals of the annual girls soccer event. Frank Wilton Hedgepeth, 53, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his home in Nashville after a 16-month battle with cancer. He was born October 28, 1953, in Nashville, N.C., the son of Frances Griffin Hedgepeth and the late Elijah Wilton Hedgepeth. Frank graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1972 and Campbell College in 1976, where he played varsity baseball. Frank returned to Nashville after college, where he began his insurance career and ran Frank Hedgepeth Insurance Agency Inc. affiliated with Nationwide for 22 years.  More ...
