School board votes for reassignment
NASHVILLE — By a vote of 8-3, the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools' board voted to change four K-5 elementary schools to K-2 and 3-5 schools at its meeting Monday night despite great opposition. The board also approved the proposed revised student reassignment policy by a vote of 9-1.

Beginning next school year, Red Oak and Swift Creek elementary schools will be linked together as K-2 and 3-5 schools, and Winstead Avenue and Englewood elementary schools will be linked together as well. More ...

Boehm named '07 Citizen of the Year
NASHVILLE - There were several adjectives used Thursday night to describe the Nashville Chamber of Commerce's 2007 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Humble, honest and reliable were at the top of the list. Surprised became the newest addition to that list as Lynne Anderson announced Jim Boehm as the 2007 Citizen of the Year.

In her letter of nomination, Anderson said Boehm had "played a vital role as a member of the Board of Directors of Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity." She added that Boehm is also active in the Lion's Club and is always offered a helping hand.  More ...

Sidewalk project bid is approved
Town Manager Preston Mitchell told board members at Tuesday night's meeting that bids were awarded to My Place or Yours, LLC for the Sidewalk Enhancement Grant Project. My Place or Yours, LLC had the lowest bid of $76,000. Mitchell said the company was a parent company of All Pro, which did the previous sidewalk work for the town.  More ...

SPRING HOPE - Spring Hope's Board awarded a $900,000 contract to Heaton Construction to demolish the existing town hall and rebuild a new one in its place.

Merlin's Song seeks shelters in areas outside Rocky Mount
Merlin's Song, a non-profit feline rescue organization, is looking for a donor with a big heart. The organization currently fosters approximately 200 felines divided among volunteer homes. Logistically, care for the animals is difficult in transporting the abandonned and sick cats to and from vet appointments. Soliciting help from new volunteers is also difficult as many people are wary of stepping into a strangers home.  More ...

GREENVILLE -- Mike Roskopf's pinch-hit RBI single with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning plated Ryan Pond and helped No. 24 N.C. State defeat East Carolina 5-4 in front of a record crowd of 5,523 on day two of the Fourth Annual Keith LeClair Classic inside Clark-LeClair Stadium last Saturday afternoon.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The winds of March blew in a strong performance last Friday for the Nash Central Lady Bulldogs.

And it brought just a teenie bit of luck in the form of a favorable goalpost.
