Nashville's Chamber of Commerce is searching for its next Distinguished Citizen.
The deadline to submit a nomination is February 10.
The Distinguished Citizen Award is presented to a citizen or business person from the Nashville area that strives to make the community a better place.

The Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties retired the colors for Anthony "Tony" Thurston Leonard during their monthly flag raising ceremony.
The flag for Leonard was lowered and presented to Leonard's wife, Doris, Saturday morning by the Joint Veterans Committee Honor Guard.
The committee honors a deceased veteran from Nash or Edgecombe County each month at the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park.

The southern end of the county will get its new senior center by the end of the year.
Nash County Commissioners awarded the contract to R&L Builders and Sons, LLC out of Battleboro at a price tag of $975,700.
Mike Tolson, Nash County Utilities Director, said bids were received on December 21. Three bids came in with R&L Builders providing the lowest bid at $994,700.

Nash UNC Health Care's Board of Commissioners has named L. Lee Isley, Ph.D., FACHE, as the organization's new president and chief executive officer (CEO). Isley has served as CEO for Granville Health System in Oxford since 2006 and has held a variety of roles in his 30-year health care career.
"Lee brings a wealth of experience in providing quality health care in rural communities," said James M. Lilley, chair of the Nash UNC Health Care Board of Commissioners.

Nash County Commissioners expressed frustration over how long it is taking to make progress in efforts to expand high speed internet access to under served areas.
Patsy McGhee, Assistant to the County Manager and Grants & Intergovernmental Relations for Nash County, told commissioners at their meeting earlier this month that there was only one proposal received for a request put out in September.

A Nash County food pantry is seeking a new home that will enable it to better serve the community.
A Touch of the Father's Love Ministry and Food Pantry in Battleboro was notified last year that it would need to relocate from its current home at 200 W Battleboro Avenue.

A Rocky Mount church was selected to serve as one of over 450 churches around the world to host a prom for people with special needs.
Englewood Baptist Church will host a Night to Shine on February 9. The event is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and will be held at churches all over the world.

Nash County Planning and Inspections issued the following building permits from January 15 through 19.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who robbed Four Points General Store on Tuesday night.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the unidentified male entered the store, which is located at 5636 Red Road in Nashville, brandishing a handgun around 9 p.m. The man demanded the employee give him money from the register.

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education wants to have more flexibility in planning the school system's calendar and plans to send a letter to state leaders.
Concerns were brought up at the board's regular meeting, which was held on Thursday, January 11.
State law currently requires public schools to have a start date no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end date no later than the Friday closest to June 11.

Nash County Parks, Recreation and Aging Services is getting ready to host its 11th annual Daddy Daughter Dance.
The event is one of the most popular activities the department offers each year, with hundreds of couples showing up each year for the dance.
"This is our biggest special event that's not athletic," said Recreation Director Thomas Gillespie.

On Sunday morning the sun shone brilliantly, after several dark days of ice and snow. Peachtree folks were glad to be able to drive safely to church for worship. They greeted one another joyously.

The Bible says, "Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness" (Genesis 15:6). We read this in the very fist book of the Old Testament of the Bible.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools (NRMPS) celebrated another successful United Way campaign on Monday, December 4, 2017 during the December Board of Education Meeting at Rocky Mount High School (RMHS). The district collected a grand total of $61,923.53 for the United Way - Tar River Region during a campaign that was held from October 23 - November 2, 2017.

Bethel Heroes members (L-R) Edith Coggin Whitby, Margaret McIntyre Sink and Margie Parker Brantley attended the UDC, NC State convention in Durham. The Chapter received a Superior Chapter award, the Daniel Branston Coltrane Cup for the highest record in UDC work for a chapter with less than 50 members, the Silver Pitcher for the greatest number of applications found correct on the first reading, and the chapter selling the greatest number of number one badge sets on a percentage basis.

Ten seventh graders in North Carolina have been awarded the Victor E. Bell, Jr. Scholarship by College Foundation, Inc. (CFI), including a Southern Nash Middle School student.
Since 2007, CFI has awarded ten new Victor E. Bell, Jr. Scholarships each year to encourage North Carolina seventh grade students with high potential to aspire to a college education.

Nash Community College held a recognition ceremony on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 to honor students completing Emergency Dispatch Academy, EMT training. The event was held at Nash Community College in Brown Auditorium.

"I am excited to finally share what it means to me to dream big, work hard, stay focused, and surround myself with good people," Lynda Hight said.
Hight graduated from the Advertising and Graphic Design program at Nash Community College in the spring of 2016. She began her studies with visual communication by placing emphasis on aiding in trauma recovery.

Upon graduation, Nurse Aide I students are equipped with basic nursing skills to provide care for patients, residents and clients in a health care setting.

I made a rookie mistake Saturday night. At least for a person new to the concept of "following doctor's orders."
I was out of state at a wedding, comfortable and just taking it all in. It was sort of odd not having a responsibility after photographing several hundred weddings during the course of my career as a Nashville-based photographer for nearly two decades.

I was sitting in church on Sunday when the topic of journalism was brought up. It wasn't brought up in a good light and I found myself wanting to hide under my seat.
But instead, I just sat there and listened because honestly, a lot of what was said was true.
Journalists are not what they used to be. The media, the news, is not what it is supposed to be.

WILSON -- An established power and an unknown newcomer threw a wrench into everyone else's plans at last Saturday's Big East Conference Dual Team Wrestling Championships at Wilson Hunt High School.
As part of the round-robin format, Wilson Fike was able to defend its league crown, while first-year conference entrant Franklinton took second place overall.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Nash Central High School girls basketball coach Terri Cash vividly remembers a conversation she had four years ago with a trio of Division I coaches.
The meeting took place at a scouting jamboree in Kinston, and the coaches were interested in recruiting Central's Ni'Ya Styles -- but were concerned about her height of 5-0.

NASH COUNTY -- Thanks to the pair of recent snowfalls, the remaining few weeks of the high school winter sports season has turned into a logistical mess.
One casualty of the calamity is the annual Big East Conference Basketball Tournament, which is always a huge revenue producer for the league's six squads.
But due to the necessary rescheduling of regular season events, the tourney will not be held this time around.

DANVILLE, VA. -- Nash County natives Raymond Bullock and Montre' Cash will enjoy a homecoming next Wednesday night.
That's when Cash and Bullock will return to the area as members of the Averett University men's basketball team for a contest at North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Everett Gym on the NCWC campus.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's and women's basketball teams each suffered tough defeats on Sunday afternoon.
The women saw division-leading and visiting Greensboro erase a 19-point second half deficit to steal the 3-point win in Everett Gym, 68-65, while men's action ended with Brevard coming back from 17 points down to drain a buzzer-beating trey that sank the Bishops on the road, 78-77.

Due to last week's snow, Nash Arts rescheduled the Bill Lyerly, Clyde Mattocks and Alan Hicks show.
The show, which was initially set for January 18, will now be held on Thursday, February 15 at 8 p.m.
