Expressions of recognition, respect, gratitude and remembrance were part of multiple area Veterans events, some of which were held the weekend before Veterans' Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11. RED OAK
The town of Red Oak held its annual Veterans Day Memorial Event at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, with the celebration timed to conclude just prior to the Ride of Honor, which began at the Flying Iron Harley-Davidson in Rocky Mount.

The Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer was held at Red Oak Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 3. Ladies representing Red Oak, Dortches, Momeyer, West Mount, Rock Creek, and West Edgecombe came together to celebrate 75 years of prayer for women. Participating from Red Oak were Taylor Brantley, Linda Sheets, Dorothy Pearce, Suzy Pearce, Audrey Pearce, Pam Wood, and Denise Langley.

I once heard a story about a little boy who prayed during Sunday School to ask Jesus to come and live in his heart. When he saw his mother, he proudly told her, "Mama, I asked Jesus to come and live in my heart today and take my skin away".
His mother chuckled but later realized that her young child was serious. Several days later, he confided his concern to her. "I've been waiting, Mama, and I still have my skin."

A 100-year-old British World War II veteran was interviewed on the BBC and told the reporter that the sacrifice his friends made and the lives of his other comrades at risk was not worth it. It was one of the saddest stories I've read this year.
"My message is, I can see in my mind's eye, rows and rows of white stones, of all the hundreds of my friends and everybody else, that gave their lives - for what?" Alex Penstone said. "The country of today... No, I'm sorry, the sacrifice wasn't worth the result that it is now."
