ROCKY MOUNT - Nash County Democrats held their annual convention April 26 at the Northgreen Country Club, conducting an active meeting and caucusing at one point to elect members to serve on the State Executive Committee.Jabaris Walker, Rocky Mount Ward 7 councilman, welcomed approximately 100 attendees, most sitting by precinct areas but some spilling over in an adjacent dining area. Prior to that, those present companionably mixed and mingled using a social "bingo" card to meet others from different precincts.

Next year’s school calendar approved by the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) board begins for students on Aug. 25, after a teacher workweek, and ends June 9. It includes 10 days of vacation at Christmas break, wrapping up the first semester on Jan. 16, two weeks after returning from the holidays.

5808.County supports Statewide Flash Flood Action
NASHVILLE - Spring Hope Mayor Kyle Pritchard has succeeded in getting initial Nash County buy-in regarding the formation of a Statewide Flash Flood Action Committee. Pritchard, who made a detailed presentation on flash flooding at the Sept. 22 commissioners' meeting, asked that a resolution be signed directing county staff to collaborate with state and federal partners, along with Spring Hope, to work on action plans and funding strategies to address flash flooding.

NASHVILLE - Most everybody knows that Nash County is famous for its sweetpotatoes; we grow accustomed to seeing people setting them in the fields in June, picking in the fall, then a lot of trucks rolling by laden with crates and crates. When the North Carolina High School Athletic Association made the decision to suspend the spring 2020 athletic season, it brought a premature end to a season I had looked forward to for a very long time. I have been coaching for 24 years, and this may have been the most complete team I have ever coached.My team and I had been waiting for this season to begin since May 10, 2019 -- the night our season ended with a disappointing loss to Harnett Central in the second round of the state playoffs.

STANHOPE -- The Shooting For A Cure II Basketball Game will be held Feb. 2 at the Southern Nash High School Gymnasium. The game will feature the host Firebirds and Ladybirds meeting Big East Conference foe Northern Nash. Action will begin with the girls contest at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys event at 8 p.m. There will be a survivor walk between games.

ROCKY MOUNT - An estimated 6,400 people packed the Rocky Mount Event Center Oct. 30 amidst heavy security to attend a rally for President-Elect Donald Trump, beginning with remarks by attending officials at 11:15 a.m. and ending with a 1 p.m. speech by Trump that lasted nearly two hours. People were still streaming in at 11 and extra chairs had to be set up until finally, there was standing room only after all the stands were full.
