5503.Nash-UNC posts $15 million loss
At a meeting of the board of Nash UNC Health Care earlier this month, CFO Al Hooks presented a final accounting of the 2014 budget year which revealed a $15,524,707 loss in income from operations. The hospital had already braced for a bad year and had budgeted for a roughly 5 million dollar loss for the 2014 fiscal year. However, the actual loss more than tripled projections.

NASH COUNTY -- Quality pitching. Supposedly, it’s the one thing Rocky Mount has more of than anyone else this spring, if listen to the baseball coaches in the Big East Conference. With hurling talents like lefty senior Hobbs Johnson and junior Benton Moss returning (both headed to North Carolina once their prep careers are over), the coaches overwhelmingly voted the Gryphons to the top spot in their 2010 preseason poll.

Last week, I mentioned local governments fighting a similar battle as privately owned businesses as both are finding it difficult to hire or keep committed employees. To add to last week's observation, there is also a huge difference in how we handle those bumpy waters.As mentioned last week, Nash County, and local municipalities, are getting slammed with requests for pay raises from their public service departments. Of course we want our law enforcement, fire fighters and EMS staff to be paid what they're worth which is honestly "priceless" when it comes to the folks who risk their lives everyday to protect and serve us!

5540.JVC holds flag raising ceremony for marines
The Joint Veterans Committee (JVC) of Nash and Edgecombe Counties honored two marines on Saturday during their monthly flag raising ceremony. A United States flag, which flew over The Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount, was taken down and presented to the family of William S. Murray, MSGT. U.S.M.C., Ret. The flag flew over the park for the past month in honor of Murray's service. His family, which includes daughter Vicky Bissette, of Elm City, said they were pleased to be able to honor Murray.

Boy, it’s been a tough couple of weeks for famous people. It’s been so bad, I’m not sure why anyone would want to even be famous. Maybe that is why we have such characters in Hollywood, sports and politics — all the qualified folks don’t want the jobs. A popular blogger and former Nash County resident spoke up for teachers on Monday at the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education Meeting. Adrian Wood, whose blog, "Tales of an Educated Debutante," said she decided to attend and speak at Monday night's meeting because she cares. The meeting drew a crowd of teachers, parents and other community members, so many that people had to line up down the hallway during the meeting because the board room was over capacity.

Spring Hope downtown development board members have lined up the first two actors in their sights to immortalize in the town's planned 'Walk of Fame,' tentatively planned to be placed on the sidewalk on Main Street from S. The Rocky Mount Debu-ette Club will hold its annual Presentation Ball on Saturday, May 30 at the Dunn Center.  Sixty freshmen and forty-seven seniors are eligible to be presented in a ceremony prior to the Ball. The Rocky Mount Debu-ette Club is a service organization for girls in ninth through twelfth grade. The purpose of the Club is to give its members an opportunity to render community service and to help them become leaders in civic and social affairs.

5595.Nash County drug bust nets 36 arrests
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 men and women throughout Nash County last week as part of a year-long campaign against street level drug dealers. The arrests were made over a three-day period last week as part of Operation Dynamite. The arrests were related to the selling of various types of illegal drugs, including marijuana, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin and prescription pills.

He asked everyone to remember the family of Jack Outlaw in their prayers. Jack passed away last week after quite a while of failing health. Jack was well loved by a lot of family members and friends.

GREENVILLE - For the first time since 1990, the Rocky Mount Gryphons entered a varsity football game with J.H. Rose as the solid favorite Friday evening. And they played like it. For the second straight year, Rocky Mount ended a major Rose streak while handing it a loss -- this time a 36-0 shutout. It was the first time Rocky Mount had held Rose scoreless since a 21-0 victory in 1984.

Over the New Year’s holiday, the Ephesus Youth Group attended Winterfest at Liberty University. Jackson Wall presented a slide show of the Christian rock bands that performed. Bebe and Harold Wall and Scott Strickland were the leaders and gave praise for this spiritual opportunity to be with these young people for this experience. We have such a wonderful group of youth at Ephesus and we pray for their spiritual revival and hope they spread it to others.
