4305.Nash County funds full-time resource officers
NASHVILLE - Nash County's Elementary Schools will now have their own full-time, full-day school resource officers, after a $500,000 request was made to Nash County commissioners at their Dec. 8 meeting. It resulted in a 5-2 split vote of approval. Steve Ellis, superintendent, appeared before the board to make the request, which initially appeared as an "information only" item on the agenda. Ellis, thanking commissioners for their "continued partnership and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and community," said he was there to ask for support to complete full funding to cover full-time SROs in each elementary school.

LOUISBURG -- Just one week after the resignation of men's basketball skipper Mark Vanderslice, the Louisburg College athletic program has lost another one of its talented young coaches.Hope Creasy, who guided LC to a successful softball camp this past spring, has stepped down to accept an assistant's position at Radford University.Radford is Creasy's alma mater, and Creasy represented the school in 2009-10 as the Big South Conference Woman of the Year. She is regarded as one of the best-ever players at the Division I school.

Rick Winstead, co-owner of Key Printing, Inc. in Nashville, passed away June 7 at the age of 67.Rick, and his college roommate at Chowan College Craig Glasgow, opened Key Printing in 1989 in a small office on Barnes Street in Nashville.The duo quickly outgrew the small office and constructed the existing facility at West Washington Street in 1993 stepping out on faith filling the building with state of the art printing equipment.

Brother Robert Tyner was acting superintendent in Sunday school today. Brother Bob was present, he just wanted Robert to get a little practice. There were 91 present with seven visitors. Allie Farmer read the Bible verse for today. She is always ready. I enjoyed preparing the lesson on Christ’s triumphal entry for today. I know the teacher always learns more than the students; because he or she studies more than the students. I enjoy the studying part. I learn more.

SPRING HOPE — Spring Hope’s Board held a special meeting Monday night to consider annexing property that could eventually be the new home of a Bojangles restaurant. The board met to consider a resolution to annex the property, which is located on the west side of Highway 581 south. The property consists of three parcels, containing 82 acres of land.

Nash County Animal Hospital wants animal lovers to remember their four-legged friends this holiday season and raise money for a local animal rescue in the process. But more than 2,000 crisis calls coming into My Sister's House in Nash County last year document crimes that no one ever hears about, because domestic violence is "a hidden crime." The Town of Middlesex is hoping to get its residents into the Christmas spirit this year with its first ever Christmas Parade. Cindy Ridgway, with the help of her family and a few others, is working hard to make the Christmas Parade an annual event. Ridgway said the town has held a children’s Christmas parade for years. “It was for kids,” Ridgway said. “They decorated their bikes, four-wheelers and go-carts.”

FAYETTEVILLE -- The USA South Conference has released it postseason awards in the sport of football with 60 student-athletes garnering accolades. Led by First Team selection Malik Adams at wide receiver, the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops had eight players earn recognition.Adams follows up last season's Offensive Player of the Year award with his third straight First Team honor. The Selma native caught a league-leading 11 touchdowns this season and ranked first in receiving yards per game (97.9).

Alumni of Red Oak High School’s Class of 1964 met last Saturday to reminicse over the past 50 years. Twenty-six students attended the reunion event, which was held at the Red Oak Community Building on Saturday, April 19. Another event was held on Friday, April 18 at the Rocky Mount Shrine Club. Students were given engraved tea glasses and an up-to-date book with names, addresses and birthdates of all classmates and teachers.

The Board of Directors of Nash General Hospital is considering an arrangement that would allow the hospital to act as a teaching hospital for Brody School of Medicine or for the proposed Campbell School of Medicine in the future. The arrangement, if approved, would allow third and fourth year medical students to work on the campus and would also establish an intern and residency program.

Preston “Pug” Moore was one of nine people inducted into the Twin County Hall of Fame on November 10. The induction took place at Edgecombe Community College during a banquet. Moore was a lifelong Rocky Mount resident and a master craftsman of 18th Century furniture. Moore passed away in 2003.

Robert Glover, 18, of Bailey, N.C., is one of 10 students from across the country who will receive a National Agri-Entrepreneurship Award and $1,000 during a ceremony at the 80th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 26. The award program recognizes young people who start or are planning to start businesses. Robert, the son of Robert and Sheila Glover, owns and operates RG Plants, an enterprise that raises certified, micro-propagated, virus-indexed strawberry plants that are free from disease and insects. He offers strawberry plugs in a 50-cell plastic tray, as well as tips, which are plants that have been cut from the field but are not rooted.

In the Army, a young officer recently graduated from college can be perceived as a 90-day wonder. I am not a 90-day wonder when it comes to DC current. Members of the West Mount Ruritan Club are known for their continuous service to the Nash County community and the community at large.  This past April they made a decision to sponsor a golf tournament to benefit the Duke Children’s Hospital.  Bayden Collins, an associate member of the club, is an 8-year-old who had a life-saving kidney transplant at Duke when he was 2-years-old.

Before opening a business in Nashville, all Randy White knew about the town was what he saw passing through on Highway 64. But a piece of property on the eastern end of town attracted White to stop by one day and look around. White opened his business, 64 Marketplace, on that property on Eastern Avenue in March and said he hasn’t regretted his decision. “I didn’t know a soul in Nashville when I came,” White said. “I liked the little town.”
