4201.Coltrane receives RMA scholarship
Sarah Cathryne Coltrane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Coltrane, has been awarded this year's Ann MacPherson Weaver Memorial Scholarship at Rocky Mount Academy. Coltrane recently completed 8th grade at Martin Millennium Academy in Tarboro. She will attend RMA in the fall on a full-tuition scholarship, valued at over $45,000 for four years.

4202.Nashville man killed in accident
A Nashville man is dead after falling asleep at the wheel early Saturday morning. According to Trooper Kevin Heath, of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Joshua Tyler Strickland, of Nashville, was traveling south on Old Bailey Highway around 5:20 Saturday morning when his vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road. Heath said Strickland’s vehicle hit a tree.

4203.Beulah Community News
Last week our minister, Daniel West helped with Christian camp at Washington, NC. Three young people from Beulah Church of Christ attended also. They were Kelsee and Trey West, the children of Daniel and Amy West, and also attending was Ashley Webb, the daughter of Greg Webb and granddaughter of Terry Lindsey. While there, several young people came forward and gave their life to Christ and the desire to be baptized. Ashley Webb from Beulah was one of those. Ashley was baptized Sunday night at Beulah. Following the baptizing, The Arise Quartet from Raleigh brought us a concert of gospel music which was really enjoyed by everyone. It was a very inspirational service.

The Nash Community College Foundation awarded $245,662 in 2019-2020 scholarships to 239 students at the 44th Annual Scholarship Awards Program held in October. The event gave scholarship recipients a chance to meet their donors and express their gratitude."My very best wishes and congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients," NCC Board Chair Paul Jaber told the students.

4211.Lieutenant wins Dancing with 2018 Arts contest
Nash Arts was filled on Friday night with people wanting to get a glimpse of local celebrities dancing to moves they recently learned for the fifth annual Dancing with the Arts. This year's fund-raising event brought in over $8,000 for Nash Arts. The dancing competition is based on which celebrity dancer receives the most votes, which are purchased for $1 each.

Nash County Commissioners recognized graduates of the eighth Nash County Citizen's Academy last Monday morning during their regular meeting. Twenty-seven Nash County residents graduated from the program this year. The Citizen's Academy, titled "Nash County Government Works" is held over 10 sessions, from January through April. Patsy McGhee, Grants and Intergovernmental Relations Administrator for Nash County, helps coordinate the event each year.

This week several of our members and friends have been sick. Herbert Skinner fell, broke his hip and is in Nash General. Saturday he had surgery on the hip and is doing better now. Jimmy Griffin fell and cut his leg and arm on some glass. He stayed in the hospital two days but now he is at home. Continue to keep all these in our prayers.

4224.Joe Wilson honored at Jack Laughery Park
Family, friends and fellow veterans gathered at the Rocky Mount Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park on Monday morning to pay tribute to Joe Wilson, who served his country for three years in the United States Navy. The Joint Veterans Committee honors a deceased veteran from Nash or Edgecombe County each month with a flag raising at the park. Wilson passed away in December 2010.

4226.Nash to fund youth vaccination incentive cards
Nash County is recommending to spend $860,000 of its American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds on a vaccination incentive program for Nash County school age children 12-18 years old in the form of a card program. At Monday's Nash County Commissioners meeting, Nash County Finance Director Donna Wood offered an outline of items and programs suggested by a committee which was appointed to explore possible uses for the ARP funds. Each item on the report included a recommended budget of funding from the ARP monies.

ROCKY MOUNT - Part of the oldest county-installed sewer line, located southwest of Rocky Mount along Highway 97, is planned for some rehab, but county officials are hoping to begin the process with a little boost from the federal government.Nash County started the ball rolling by submitting a letter of interest to FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), and was then invited to submit an application for an advance assistance program to prepare a "shovel-ready" project.

4233.DAR holds Memorial Day service to honor Vietnam veterans
On May 19, 2014, the Micajah Pettaway Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated Memorial Day by laying a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial on Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount.  The memorial was constructed by the VFW in 1983.  DAR wanted to honor  Vietnam Veterans and those Missing in Action by paying tribute to them and remembering what they achieved for our country and the incredible sacrifices that they made.

MOMEYER - Momeyer Ruritans celebrated 60 years as a club Dec. 16 with a night of recognitions, steak dinners and a 'dirty santa' game where door prizes were drawn only to be quickly 'stolen.' 4239.Tornado touches down in Nash Co.
The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-2 tornado in Southern Nash County on Monday morning. The tornado touched down around 10:13 a.m. on Monday, May 13 four miles northeast of Knightdale in Wake County, traveling 17.40 miles and ending at 10:39 a.m. four miles northwest of Bailey. Wind speeds reportedly reached a maximum of 115 miles per hour.

4254.Luminary service held for local teen fighting cancer
Nick Tyson has been fighting to get his life back for a year now. Tyson was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma last May after a lump appeared on the inside of his leg. He was 14 years old.Tyson’s mom, Jennifer Watson, said Tyson woke up one Sunday morning and discovered the lump. He had played sports the day before so at first, Watson thought he had just injured it.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash High School (SNHS) has announced coaching changes for the 2016-2017 School Year. A total of three new coaches for soccer, softball and volleyball will begin their new coaching assignments at the start of the new school year. Carlos Barron, social studies teacher, will assume the duties of the varsity boys' soccer program as well as the girls' varsity soccer program. The first Edwina Rooker Commemorative Concert will be held at Cherry Hill Plantation on Sunday, July 31st at 3:00 PM. The Three Triangle Tenors will present "Summer Rhapsody" as a tribute to the longtime supporter of the Cherry Hill Historic Foundation and former Warrenton resident, Edwina Rooker. Ms. Rooker, a fan of the Cherry Hill Concert Series, was also a devotee of jazz, beach music, Broadway and Hollywood themes, and popular music of her youth. As a tribute to Ms. Rooker, the performers will sing Broadway show tunes, folk songs, and well-known opera arias.

Former students shared memories of their time at the Castalia Rosenwald School during an open house event held on Saturday. The event was hosted by the Castalia Community Development Corporation, who has been working to restore the school so it can be used by the community. The historic Rosenwald School, known in the community as the Castalia Elementary School, was established in 1920 to serve African American children in the community.

Nashville resident Linda Woolard has long wanted to do something to bring veterans and their sacrifices to the forefront. Woolard said while searching for an organization to partner with, her friend, Pam Salsby, suggested some options which included a newly organized effort in Wake County, the US Military Veterans Foundation. Woolard organized a meeting of local leaders recently to discuss the possibility of a  local fund-raising and public awareness effort.

Rocky Mount Gynecology and Women’s Health is now a part of the Nash Health Care network. Nash Health Care Systems recently announced it had acquired the women’s health practice and while it will own the practice, Vidant Medical Group will manage its operations. Last year, the Nash Health Care Board of Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding that prepared the system for a relationship with Vidant Medical Group, formerly Universal Health Care Systems, to provide management and employment services for area physician practices.

Tickets sold out for this year's annual Derby Day in Red Oak. The Red Oak Area Historical Society hosted the event on Saturday at the Historic Red Oak Teacherage, with 200 attending the second annual event. The event served as a fundraiser for the Historical Society, who is working to raise money to preserve the old teacherage. Plans are to renovate the home to be utilized as a multi-purpose venue for the community.

Chamber member David Bradley recalled the way Pete always responded when asked how he was doing. “Like a champ,” Pete would say. “That’s Pete,” Bradley said. Betty “Ruth” Bone Joyner, 93, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2008. She was born July 26, 1915 in Nash County. She was the daughter of the late William Lee and Bettie Winstead Bone. Ruth was a member of Sandy Cross Methodist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Ruth loved her flowers, crocheting, music and especially Elvis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otha J. Joyner, one son, Herbert Monroe Joyner and a grandson, J.W. Joyner, three brothers and two sisters.

ROCKY MOUNT - Leroy Murray, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Friday, March 16, 2007. He was born March 3, 1921 in Nash County, son of Matthew Andrew and Elizabeth Savage Murray. Leroy was a retired postal clerk and an avid golfer until he became disabled with Parkinson's disease. Leroy served in the US Army Air Force during World War II flying fifty missions over Europe in a B 17 Flying Fortress. Leroy was also a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, active until his illness confined him to his home.
