NASHVILLE - Elsie Mae Benson, 95, passed away July 20, 2008. She was born May 31, 1913 in Castalia, NC daughter of the late A.A. Drake and Claire Christine Collins. She grew up in Spring Hope, NC where she attended Spring Hope School and graduated with honors as valedictorian of her senior class. She graduated from East Carolina College and Atlantic Christian College.

4102.HOPE celebrates three years
The HOPE Initiative of Nash County celebrated its three-year-anniversary on Saturday evening on the steps of the Nash County Courthouse.A candelight ceremony was held to honor the 462 participants who have come through the program since its inception and to also remember those who have lost their battle with substance abuse disorders.

PINETOPS -- The Nash County Jr. Firebirds kicked off their Eastern North Carolina Football League season last Saturday against the homestanding SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars.  In the rookie game, the Firebirds  got off to a great start with Jordan Vick taking the first play from scrimmage 80 yards for the score.

Nashville's Chamber of Commerce will add a new person to its list of Distinguished Citizens at a special event on Thursday, March 3. The 25th annual Distinguished Citizen event will be held at Nash Arts and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. prior to the ceremony which will begin at 7 p.m.In addition to recognizing the 2016 Distinguished Citizen, the event also recognizes past recipients.

The children and chaperones from Red Oak Baptist Church had a great time at Camp Caraway recently! There were 19 children and 5 chaperones who attended. Campers reported that they enjoyed the missionary and various recreational activities. They thanked everyone who supported them through their fundraisers to make their trip possible. 4114.CROP Program receives new telemetry equipment
New state-of-the-art telemetry equipment will provide exercise specialists with a valuable tool to help rehabilitation patients at Nash Health Care. The equipment is used as a part of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program (CROP), housed at the HealthFirst Rehabilitation and Fitness Center. CROP is a state-regulated, medically supervised and EKG-monitored program designed for individuals with cardiovascular and pulmonary-related complications. Patients enrolled in the CROP program may have had previous heart attacks, angina or coronary by-pass surgery and/or pulmonary (lung) complications such as COPD, asthma or emphysema.

4116.'Dogs wrap up play in Tarboro
TARBORO -- Many Nash Central baseball fans thought that this might be the Bulldogs' year at the 14th Annual Tarboro Classic at Municipal Stadium. But for the second straight year, Nash Central had a bumpy opening round game to throw it into the consolation bracket. Two wins there put the Bulldogs in the fifth place spot for a second consecutive year.

Nashville's Town Council agreed to move forward with the process of establishing social districts in two areas of town but want more input from the community before standing fully behind the idea. The idea of establishing a social district in downtown and at the Nashville Junction was recommended by the Downtown Nashville Strong Advisory Board.

WOODBRIDGE, VA. -- The Carolina Mudcats made a valiant comeback, but were foiled by Oscar Tejeda’s moon shot in the last of the 11th during a Class A Carolina League baseball showdown against the Potomac Nationals. Tejada’s second home run of the night vaulted the Nationals to a 6-5 win on Sunday evening at Pfitzner Stadium. The Mudcats (19-18, 48-57) lost their sixth straight as the Nationals (20-15, 58-46) swept the three-game series.

4122.Opry set for March 4th
The Nashville Business and Professional Women's (BPW) Club have been giving out scholarships to area youth for over 30 years. Each year, money is raised for the scholarship fund through one fund raising event; the Elsie Clark Memorial Nashville Opry. The Opry has been a successful fund raiser for the club for over 30 years as well and this year, the club hopes the success will continue. This year's Opry is set for Friday, March 4 from 6 until 10 p.m. at Nash Arts.

4134.Ministry hosts Cancer Fund Run
Nine years ago, the Guardians of the Cross Bikers Ministry started a fund-raiser to help families dealing with cancer. The goal was to raise at least $1,000 to give to two families. Last Saturday morning, the Guardians of the Cross were able to give over $1,300 to three families. The Cancer Fund Run was initially started by Guardians co-founder Danny “Preacher Man” James.

4135.Major drug supplier sent to prison for 15 years
A Nash County man accused of being the chief supplier of cocaine and meth in Nashville, Spring Hope and Castalia has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.Sean Jermaine Mills, 41, was an armed drug trafficker with direct connections to Mexican cartels when authorities began to investigate him in mid 2020.Mills was arrested in May 2022 and pleaded guilty in federal court in November 2022 to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and possessing a firearm to further his drug trafficking activity, according to court records.

The Coopers High School 91st Alumni Association banquet was held Saturday, April 26 at the Coopers School gymnasium. A social was held from 4-5 p.m. President Janice Worrell welcomed everyone. 4143.School system releases year end testing data
The Nash-Rocky Mount School Board released an end-of-year assessment data review at the school board workshop on Monday, indicating slow growth in most areas, but revealing that fewer than 50 percent of students meet state proficiency requirements overall.  The data was compiled from the End of Grade and End of Course testing done at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

The Nash-Rocky Mount School Board chose to retain the same chair and vice-chair as it approaches a new year with four new members on board. Evelyn Bulluck will retain her seat as Chairman of the Board while Franklin Lamm will serve another term as Vice-Chair. However, the school board did decide to change its current meeting times back to a schedule similar to one held in the past.

A local church’s community choir hopes to bring healing to Downtown Nashville next week during a special event on the courthouse steps. “New View” will be held on Tuesday, December 23 at noon on the steps of the Nash County Courthouse. The event will feature singing, dancing and remarks from various people. The focus of the event is to bring healing to the community, said Lisa Webb, the choir director for Selah!, the Community Choir at Church on the Rise.

ROCKY MOUNT - Rocky Mount High School celebrated its student athletes with its annual athletic banquet last Thursday evening at the school’s main gym -- the last one ever to be held on the campus. 4161.Rocky Mount duo sentenced for jewelry store robberies
A Rocky Mount man and woman were sentenced to 10 years in prison for two jewelry store robberies that occurred in 2017. Chief United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle sentenced Jaquin Jamal Pratt, 20, and Nikita Shontel Taylor, 26, of Rocky Mount, to 120 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release and 87 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release.

It’s been a busy time around the area lately. Relay for Life wrapped up its annual event on April 26th, attracting the largest number of participants and visitors ever.
