County rec hosting winter signups

NASH COUNTY -- Registration for basketball and futsal (indoor soccer) is open until November 15 for the Nash County Parks and Recreation Winter Youth Sports Leagues.
Basketball will be offered for boys and girls ages 4-18 at Nashville Elementary, Coopers Elementary, Spring Hope Elementary and Middlesex Elementary.

It was a cool, dreary morning, making for difficult playing conditions.

Bishops roll to grid conquest

ROCKY MOUNT -- Led by a career day from senior running back Adrian Minondo, the North Carolina Wesleyan College football team rolled to a huge 37-10 win over conference rival Methodist University on Homecoming last Saturday afternoon.
Minondo rushed for a career high of 246 yards and 3 TDs as he almost outgained the entire Methodist offense by himself to help the Bishops improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

RALEIGH -- After guiding North Carolina State University's baseball squad to a 40-win season and top-25 finish in the rankings last year, Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent announced the program's 2019 schedule Thursday afternoon.
Avent is a Nash County native who prepped at Northern Nash High School.

RED OAK -- Northern Nash's boys cross country team continued its dominant season last Saturday, finishing runner-up in the 2018 Class 3-A East Regional in Red Oak, securing a spot in the State Championships for the seventh consecutive year.
Along with their seventh consecutive Big East Championship title, the Knights maintained another strong campaign in 2018, and will head to Kernersville this weekend to take on the best 3A teams in the state.

WILSON -- After having to move its football game up one day due to weather, Northern Nash traveled to Fike last Thursday night in hopes of keeping the Golden Demons winless in Big East Conference play.
But because of a rough defensive performance from the Knights that allowed four long touchdowns, Fike was able to knock off Northern by a 40-20 margin.

FRANKLINTON -- The Game of the Year in the Big East Conference Boys Soccer Standings came two weeks ago, when host Franklinton edged Southern Nash in a double-overtime thriller with second place in the league at stake.
As fate would have it, the clubs would meet again last Tuesday in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament on the FHS campus.

Nash Central High School History Teacher Renny Taylor has once again been recognized as an outstanding teacher.
Taylor was awarded the Historical Society of North Carolina Outstanding Teacher of North Carolina Award on October 12 at a special banquet. Taylor received an award and $150.

Nashville's Fire Department (NFD) invited its community to join a special ceremony Sunday to commission a new 2018 Pierce Enforcer 1500/1000 Pumper Truck into service at Station 14.
Nashville Fire Chief Chris Joyner welcomed NFD staff and volunteers, town staff, council members, and members of the community to the wetdown ceremony which is a long-time firefighter ritual of spraying water from another fire apparatus anointing a new truck into service.

Parks and Rec Advisory Board to meet Nov. 5th

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department for the Town of Nashville is getting close to starting work on a Master Plan that will help define the future of recreational opportunities in Nashville.
A public forum was recently held to gain input from citizens on different things they wanted to see in recreation.

Cloudy skies and cool temperatures on Saturday didn't keep Vicki Robbins, along with family and guests, from walking to raise awareness about opioid addiction.
Approximately 75 people came out to join Robbins and her family in downtown Nashville at the first annual Come as you are for Coty Addiction Awareness Walk and Rally to honor her son, Coty, who passed away due to an overdose on June 3rd of this year. Coty became addicted to pain pills following surgery after a football injury.

Reggie Dabbs visits local elementary schools

National recognized motivational speaker Reggie Dabbs recently visited four local schools to share a message with students.
Dabbs visited Nashville Elementary, Swift Creek Elementary, Englewood Elementary and MB Hubbard Elementary Schools on Octover 19. The visits were possible because of a partnership between Nash-Rocky Mount Communities in Schools and local community partners.
