Knights drop toughie to RMHS

RED OAK -- One of the fiercest rivalries in North Carolina had its newest chapter written on Friday night when the Rocky Mount Gryphons traveled to Northern Nash High School for a critical matchup on the hardwood.
The contest served as senior night for Northern Nash, with Knight fans hoping to avenge their earlier losses to Rocky Mount throughout the season.

Howle Earns Honor

GREENSBORO -- Football has always been a family affair for David Howle, so the most exciting part of his recent lifetime membership into the North Carolina Football Coaches Association was the fact that his entire family was there to be a part of the event.
Two Saturdays ago, Howle was joined by his wife, Jane; daughter, Abby; son, Ty and daughter-in law Karen at the ceremony, which was held at the Greensboro Downtown Marriott.

Carolina Mudcats name new manager

ZEBULON -- The Milwaukee Brewers have named Victor Estevez as the new manager of the Carolina Mudcats for the 2022 season.
Estevez will be joined in Carolina by newly announced pitching coach Drew Thomas, hitting coach Ken Joyce, coach Jorge Ortega, athletic trainer Benny Arroyo and strength and conditioning specialist Jonah Mergen.

NCWC registers home victory

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team used terrific defense to shut down the Knights of Southern Virginia 66-45 on Senior Day last Saturday afternoon.
The big conference game improved the Bishops to 8-4 in the Division and 16-7 overall and they remain just one-half game back of 2nd-place Pfeiffer in the East.

NCWC wins first contest

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College baseball team rallied from an early deficit to win its home opener 4-2 last Friday against non-conference foe Bridgewater College (Va.).
Junior 2B Davie Morgan began the rally with his leadoff solo home run in the 6th inning. He then drove in sophomore SS Tyson Bass in the seventh inning to tie the score at two.

ROCKY MOUNT -- What started out as the Kaileigh Gunter Show was pre-empted by the Jermia Walker Show during Tuesday's regular season girls basketball contest between Southern Nash and homestanding Nash Central.
Gunter got things going for Central with a strong first quarter, but Walker and the Ladybirds controlled the proceedings there, pulling away for a 45-28 decision at the NCHS Gymnasium.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Heading into the Class 3-A State Playoffs on a four-game losing streak wasn't the proposition the Southern Nash boys basketball team had envisioned after being a dominant force for the overwhelming majority of the 2021-22 campaign.
But that was the scenario the Firebirds faced Tuesday as they attempted to snap a three-game losing streak on the road against a fired-up Nash Central club that was playing in front of a huge Senior Night crowd.

STANHOPE -- Leo Jones played only one varsity season with the Southern Nash High School football team -- but he certainly made the most of it.
Jones was a jack-of-all-trades last year for the Firebirds as he played a wealth of different positions while earning All-Big East Conference honors.
With Jones playing a key role, the Firebirds posted a sterling 9-2 record in 2021 while reaching the second round of the Class 3-A State Playoffs.

Chances are that if you're reading this column, you believe in Christ. That means when you die, you will appear before the judgment seat of Christ where the Bible says we will be held accountable for what we did with our lives.
A reader recently asked me what happens at the judgment seat? What she couldn't understand was if our sins really have been thrown into the sea of forgetfulness, how can we be held accountable for them? In other words, can we go to hell from the judgment seat?

Bailey subdivision denied again

Nash County Commissioners denied construction of a subdivision for a second time, despite changes made to its original plan.
Initially, the proposed plan called for a 204-lot subdivision to be built off of Green Pond Loop Road, which is northeast of Bailey. Seventy of the 204 residential lots were said to be accessed directly from Green Pond Loop Road.

The Town of Nashville is planning to host an informational meeting about water bills.
Two Nashville residents raised concerns over the water billing system in the town at town council's regular meeting on Tuesday night.
Daniel Woodfin, who lives on Birchwood Drive, also spoke on water bills and said he felt a policy should be changed on how water is cut off.

Cara Cotugno of Nash County Girl Scouts Troop 611 is pictured selling Girl Scout Cookies in downtown Nashville in front of Nash Arts Center Tuesday. She is a top seller within the troop. Over the years, she has sold over 10,000 boxes and will be headed on trips overseas to represent the Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts will be in the area selling cookies and taking donations to send to soldiers.

Spring Hope to pull cleanup services from Envrionlink

The town of Spring Hope is seeking to remove a few services from its contract with its current public works contractor.
Town Manager Andrew DeIonno said the town is requesting quotes from various companies for leaf and limb pickup as well as mowing town owned properties.
Envirolink, the town's present maintenance company, usually fulfills that need.

Suspects cleared in murder case

Murder charges have been dropped against three of four men charged with the 2017 quadruple murder that happened in the Glenview community of Halifax County.
Married couples James and Janice Harris and James and Peggy Whitley were sitting around a kitchen table playing card games in a home when they were fatally shot and killed in August, 2017.

Nash may relocate nutrition warehouse

Nash County Public Schools Board of Education member Evelyn Bulluck requested clarification last week of the proposed use of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER) for the purpose of buying new freezers and moving the child nutrition warehouse from Rocky Mount to Nashville.
The child nutrition warehouse is currently located on Nutrition Street in Rocky Mount which is in Edgecombe County.

COVID-19 cases continue to decline in Nash County

Nash County Health Department Director Bill Hill reported Tuesday COVID-19 cases in the county are continuing decline.
He said over the past week there has been 352 new cases which brings the county to 26,638 confirmed cases.
Hill said two deaths have occurred this week which increases the total number of fatalities to 276.
