Spring Hope reopens public works department

The Town of Spring Hope has reestablished its own public works department after a seesaw relationship with its former provider.
The town was contracted with Envirolink, a utility management company, since 2011.
Over the years, both residents and town staff expressed dissatisfaction in the performance of Envirolink with the upkeep of grass at cemeteries among other maintenance issues.

Nash County board okays Sunday morning alcohol sales

Some of Nash County's businesses are now able to sell alcohol before noon on Sundays after a request was approved by most of the board of commissioners.
Senate Bill 155, also known as the "Brunch Bill" was signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper in June of 2017.
The bill allows places such as retail outlets and restaurants to start selling alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sundays, instead of noon.

Nash Arts Center exhibit features local author, songwriter and artist

The Nash County Arts Council will host an art exhibit from September 7 - 27, at Nash Arts Center, 100 E. Washington Street, Nashville, featuring the works of Mike Clark. An artist reception will be held on Saturday, September 10th from 10 a.m. until noon. Light refreshments will be provided.
Mike Clark has seven college degrees, including two Ph.Ds, and is a recording artist, songwriter, and author of three books.

Last week, U.S. Customs and Border agents decided to double-check a shipment of baby wipes coming from Mexico to Laredo, Texas.
It turned out there were almost 2,000 packages of cocaine totaling over 1,500 pounds and with a street value of $11.8 million.

It's official. Nashville's Town Council approved the purchase of the former location of Acme Cleaners which will become the new location of its parks and recreation center.
This has been one of the town's smarter moves with "future visioning." Our parks and rec quickly outgrew its current location and it does make better sense to own rather than lease long-term.

God's grace abounds, even when we don't see it

God's grace is always sufficient, but it's not always easy to recognize. Let me give you a real-life example.
Seventeen years ago, my wife, Robbie, noticed a small spot on her chin. When she went to the doctor, it was determined to be basal cell carcinoma. It's a harmless form of skin cancer. However, you have to remove it, or it will just keep growing.

John 11 records the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. John tells the story in a series of conversations. The passage begins with a conversation Jesus has with his disciples about the sickness and death of Lazarus. When he finally arrived in Bethany, Lazarus' sister Marth confronted him. In the ensuing conversation, Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25). Then Jesus talked with Lazarus' other sister, Mary.

TONIGHT AT NASH ARTS

Nash Arts welcomes The Dedicated Men of Zion to its stage tonight, Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. General admission is $15 ($10 for members). North Carolina's Dedicated Men of Zion are a sacred soul gospel quartet. The group, composed of vocalists/siblings Anthony "Amp" and Antwan Daniels, Marcus Sugg, and Dexter Weaver, are friends and church congregants.

Rocky Mount appoints new City Clerk

Kim Batts has been sworn in as the ninth City Clerk in Rocky Mount's history.
Batts, 45, takes over the position from Pamela Casey, who retired Sept. 1. Batts has been a member of the organization since 2013 and has served as Deputy Clerk since 2013.

12, 10, 7 and 3. What are these numbers? These were the numbers as we went into the holiday weekend.
There were 12 adult dogs, 7 teen puppies at the shelter. There were also 3 female cats, one that has a litter of kittens and one that is pregnant. There were 10 adult dogs in temp foster care, who are transitioning to their Rescues or seeking Rescues.

FIELD OF HONOR OPENS TODAY

Heroes Field of Honor
Flags will fly around the clock from September 8 through September 11 at 1114 S. First Street in Nashville in honor of local heroes.
The project is organized and hosted by the Rocky Mount VFW Post 2057 and the Sharpsburg Exchange Club.

Local church celebrates 150 years
Local church celebrates 150 years

Union Hill Baptist Church is celebrating 150 years of existence during its annual homecoming in September.
The place of worship is one of the oldest churches in Nash County. It began in 1871 during the Antebellum period as a brush arbour, or a private location where free and enslaved people would meet to practice their religious traditions.

High-speed chase ends in crash, arrest

A high-speed chase in Nashville ended with a totaled car and the arrest of the driver.
North Carolina Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Perry Caskey said he was outside the Nash County Courthouse performing a traffic stop for a vehicle on August 26 around 9:53 p.m. when he witnessed another vehicle speeding past.

COMMUNITY DAY 2022

A community day was held in Castalia August 27 by town resident Cortney McCalston. The purpose of it was to bring awareness to violent crimes and to promote unity. Children participated in activities including water balloon games, jumping in bouncy houses, storytime, and sack races. McCalston said community day will be held again in the summer of 2023.

Local farmers weigh in on proposed land use plan for Nash Co.

Nash County's draft future land use plan seeks to help the county grow but some farmers are concerned about how it will impact their farmland.
Nash County Planning and Inspections Department Director Adam Tyson said the current land use plan was adopted over 16 years ago.
He said it is necessary to update the plan every five to 10 years, according to how a community is experiencing growth and change.

Nacho Average Volunteer!

The Nash County Senior Center recognized a few of its volunteers during its annual volunteer social.
The social was held at the Nash County Senior Center on August 24 with the theme, "Nacho Average Volunteer."
Tamika Hill, Nash County Senior Center senior services coordinator, said the social is a great way to show appreciation to volunteers for hard work they put forth in the community.
