Community and volunteers landscape home for local veteran
Community and volunteers landscape home for local veteran

Every week, Michael Beck visits 3377 Elmwood Road in the Oak Level community to check the progress on his family's new home.
This past weekend, significant progress was made, as dozens of volunteers came out to help landscape the home.
In just over a month, Homes for Our Troops will turn over the keys to Beck and his family.
Beck was serving in the United States Army as a Sergeant when he was wounded in 2008 while deployed in Iraq. Beck spent four years undergoing over 100 surgeries, rehabilitation and other treatment before finally being sent back home to Rocky Mount in 2012. But, Beck lost both his legs.

Have you ever had something that just wouldn't stop eating at you? I have recently and it's not a good feeling. I was consumed by what someone "wasn't" doing more than focusing in on the reasons I was doing what I was doing. I was letting someone harden my heart and make me bitter. I finally had to let it go and give it to hands that were stronger and more capable than mine. There are a lot of things in life I guess we just aren't supposed to understand; that's when we need to really let go and let God!

Nashville Topped Versus Tarboro

TARBORO -- Nashville's Hornets are still looking for their first touchdown of the 2015 Eastern North Carolina Football League varsity season.
The Hornets had some chances to break that skein last Saturday as part of a road contest against the Tarboro Vikings at Tarboro High School in Edgecombe County.
Nashville, coached by Jim Glover, drove into Tarboro territory on a few occasions, including the opening two marches of the key conference matchup.

RED OAK - All it took was one touchdown to determine the winner of last Thursday's football showdown between Tri-County Conference rivals Nash Central and Red Oak.
But while defense ruled the day, there was still plenty of suspense as part of Red Oak's 7-0 home decision over the Trojans.
Both clubs had their share of chances during the contest -- only to be foiled.

The Hornets had experienced a near-miss one week earlier against Rocky Mount, but came through in the clutch last Saturday to claim the Eastern North Carolina Football League decision.

STANHOPE -- It was a season that should probably be made into a motion picture one day.
Back in 2012, a coach who didn't profess to be a soccer genius helped lead the Southern Nash Firebirds to the Big East Conference Championship -- and all the way to the Elite Eight of the Class 3-A State Playoffs.
To that point in the program's history, Southern had been considered a laughingstock afterthought in the Big East.

FAYETTEVILLE -- The USA South Conference has released its preseason coaches polls for men's and women's basketball.
