ROCKY MOUNT - Sorell "Sol" Massenburg, age 72, passed away September 6, 2023. Born in Nash County on November 2, 1950, he was the son of the late Joe Massenburg and Alice Ann Richardson Massenburg. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thurman Massenburg, Sr., Joe Massenburg, Jr., James Massenburg, Herbert Massenburg, and Wilbert Massenburg; and his sister, Evelyn Barnhill.

Sorell is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce Sumner Massenburg; his daughters, Evie Carter (Bryce) and Erica Joy Johnson (Cedric); his son, Sorell Sumner Massenburg (Nedra); 8 grandchildren; his sisters, Ammie Everett, Minnie Silver (Julius), Mae Bell Lewis (Henry), Ann Sumner (Walter), and Brinda Massenburg; his sisters-in-law, Lucille Massenburg, Gloria Richardson, Delinda Massenburg, Veronica Massenburg, Edith Battle (Van), and Irene Woherem; his brother-in-law, Jeremiah Sumner (Doris); and by many nieces, nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Church on the Rise, 3520 Bishop Road, Rocky Mount, with Rev. Richard Gurganus officiating. A burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service in the Sanctuary of Church on the Rise.
