ROCKY MOUNT - Velma Mae Winstead Moss, age 85, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022. Born in Nash County on November 21, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Buddy Cecil Winstead and Maude Batchelor Winstead. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Jo Moss Cockrell; her brothers, Odell Winstead, Shelton Winstead, Pete Winstead, D.H. Winstead, George "Teeny" Winstead, and Herbert Winstead; her sisters, Earline Taylor and Juanita Cockrell; her son-in-law, Joseph William Cockrell; and her niece, Betty Parker.

Velma is survived by her husband of 69 years, Simon Moss, Jr.; her son, Michael "Mike" Erskine Moss (Jamie) of Nashville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
