ROCKY MOUNT - John Crosson Coats, Jr., age 85, passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Born in Rocky Mount on November 23, 1935, he was the son of the late John Crosson Coats, Sr. and Amanda Dudley Coats. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Lee Coats; his sister, Dannie Carter; and a son, John Randy Coats.

John is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith Coats; his sons, Robert Anthony Coats and Martin Lynn Coats; his sisters-in-law, Nellie Peele and Carole Coats; and many nieces and nephews.

John had requested that there not be a public funeral or burial service. He will have a private burial at Rocky Mount Memorial Park and be laid to rest beside his mother and son.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the family is requesting no at home visits except for family with prior arrangement via phone.
