ELM CITY - Calvin Matthew Horne, 93, of the Mount Zion community, died Friday, February 23, 2018, at his home.

The funeral was held Monday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Calvin Matthew Horne was born August 25, 1924, in Live Oak, Florida to Homer Judson Horne and Ruth Cook Horne. He leaves his wife of 71 years, Annie Lee Horne. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

He graduated from Live Oak High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at age 19. He served as Marine Corporal on the U.S.S. Massachusetts in World War II. Upon returning to the states, he married the love of his life, Annie Lee Eason, on September 18, 1946 where they established their home in Nash County.

Calvin began his career as a sharecropper and spent his life as a successful farmer and agri-businessman. He continued to have a love for the land well after retiring from farming in 2004, spending every summer tending to his massive garden.

A devoted member of Mt. Zion, where he served in many different capacities for over 70 years, including Adult Sunday School Teacher and United Methodist Men. He found great joy in serving his community and was active in the Gideon's International Nash Camp and the Cooper's Ruritan Club.

Surviving are his sons, Alvin M. Horne (Susan) of Hillsborough, and Wayne R. Horne (Brenda) of Rocky Mount. Grandchildren, David Askew and Tracey Bass, Christian Horne and Jessica Horne, Matthew Horne (Nikki), Kelly Mixson (Joey), Dina Seitz (Chris), BJ Horne (Katie), Josh Horne (Laura). Great-Grandchildren, Faith H., Hailey A., Lindsey A., Payton H., Caley A., Jon Ayden H., Lucy S., Adam H., Maggie S., Nehemiah H., Bailey H., Brooks M., Gideon H., Judson H.

We especially want to thank the wonderful caregivers providing loving and compassionate care during his time of need, Sue Pearce, Ida Small, Tracy Taylor, and all the loving staff from Action Health Staffing and Community Hospice.
