John Arlen Hammond, age 79, of Rocky Mount, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016. He was born on August 29, 1937 in Rocky Mount to the late John Edward and Reba Williamson Hammond. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jean Hammond Thompson.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna Easley Spruill Hammond; his sons John Arlen Hammond, Jr. and his wife Cindy, and Alexander Spruill Hammond and his wife Kathryn; and his daughter Harriet Elizabeth Hammond; five grandchildren.

A memorial visitation for friends to gather with the family will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Rocky Mount. A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in honor of John to Hospice of Nash General or to a charity of one's choice.
