Warren Evans

Warren Evans

Warren Evans, 95, a lifelong Nashville resident, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at home surrounded by his family. Born December 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Ira Thomas and Roberta Creekmore Evans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Nerine Joyner, Eula Batchelor, and Doreen Matthews; brothers, Bernice Evans, Herman Evans, William Evans, and Capel Evans.

In 1943, Mr. Evans established Acme Cleaners and Laundry in Nashville. The 73 year old family business remains a quality Nashville business.

Mr. Evans' resume of public service is long. In the 1950's he served two terms on the Nashville Town Council. While serving on the Council he was elected as Town Treasurer. He was instrumental in organizing the Nashville Jaycees where he served as the charter president. Mr. Evans served as a member and chairman of the Southern Bank Board of Advisors in Nashville. He was a longtime member of Nashville Baptist Church where he served in many capacities including the Board of Deacons as vice-chairman and chairman.

Mr. Evans knew the importance of education and encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their educational dreams. He was a member of the Nash County School Board from 1962 to 1974, serving the last six years as chairman. Mr. Evans was appointed to the Nash Community College Board of Trustees in 1969 where he served for 27 years. During his time as Trustee, he served as vice-chairman for 14 years and chairman for 11 years.

On December 1, 1991, Mr. Evans was elected Mayor of Nashville. A position he held for 16 years. He was proud of Nashville and its people. Not once in his years of community service did he complain about a job that needed to be done or a situation that seemed impossible to resolve. He saw every situation as a challenge and an opportunity to make a difference.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 70 years, Hilda Griffin Evans; children, Carol Evans Gay, Tim Evans and wife Rosemarie; grandchildren, Leigh Ann Wingfield and husband Scott, Timothy Evans and wife Dana, and Anna Brooke Teets and husband Doug; great-grandchildren, Anna Scott Wingfield, Griffin Wingfield, John Thomas Wingfield, Evan Teets and Lilly Teets; and brother, Lucius Evans.
