Nashville- Channing Hilliard Fries, Jr. Age 92 died Saturday May 12, 2007. C.H. was born in Rowan County on December 20, 1914 to Mittie and C.H. Fries, Sr. He was a graduate of Catawba College and received his MEd. from East Carolina Teacher's College. After teaching for four years in Nashville, N.C., he joined the US Navy shortly after the beginning of World War II. He spent most of the war years serving in North Africa and Italy. Upon returning to the States, he married Rubye Mayton of Cary. Following his discharge from military service, he returned to Nashville in 1946 where he served as teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and, for sixteen years, as superintendent of Nash County Schools until his retirement in June 1977. He was, for many years, an active member of Nashville United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, MYF leader and choir member.

C.H. was awarded the Exemplary Life Service Award by Catawba College in 2001 for his many years of service in the field of education. He was an avid gardener, providing family and friends with a bounty of vegetables and flowers. He loved the beach, surf fishing and music of all kinds. He was a talented musician and shared that talent for many years through his church and civic gatherings.
C.H. was preceded in death by his wife, three grandchildren, his parents, four sisters and seven brothers.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane Penny and husband Jack of Raleigh and Cheryl Fries of Greensboro; his granddaughters, Marnie Church and husband John of Oak Ridge, N.C., Shelly McGahee, Courtney McGahee and Stacey McGahee of Greensboro; his great-granddaughters, Madison and Hailey Church of Oak Ridge; many nieces and nephews.

A Gathering to Celebrate his life was held Tuesday May 15, 2007
At the Nashville United Methodist Church with Rev. James Lee officiating.

Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Nashville.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262; National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33136-1494; or the charity of one's choice.
