LEROY MURRAY


ROCKY MOUNT- Leroy Murray, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Friday, March 16, 2007. He was born March 3, 1921 in Nash County, son of Matthew Andrew and Elizabeth Savage Murray. Leroy was a retired postal clerk and an avid golfer until he became disabled with Parkinson's disease. Leroy served in the US Army Air Force during World War II flying fifty missions over Europe in a B 17 Flying Fortress. Leroy was also a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, active until his illness confined him to his home.

Leroy leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 58 years, Ernestine Frazier Murray; a son, Ernie Keith Murray and wife Becky; a daughter, Vanessa Murray Smith and husband Gary; three grandchildren, Erika Murray Smith, Kyle Matthew Smith, and Matthew Andrew Murray. He was "granddaddy" to his nieces and nephews, and a friend to all who knew him.

He will be remembered for his love of people, music, and the game of golf; his witty sense of humor; his special love for children; his woodworking abilities; and his courageous perseverance during his long illness.

A celebration of his life was held on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

The entire family would like to give special thanks to Portia Smith, caregiver, for her compassionate care and support during his lengthy illness. Additionally, the family thanks Hospice staff Elizabeth Davis, Dorothy Jones, and Debbie Stilley. Those who prefer may make contributions to Hospice of Nash General or Calvary Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
