Samuel "Sammy" Manin Bass

SAMUEL "SAMMY" MANIN BASS

DORTCHES - Samuel "Sammy" Manin Bass, age 71, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on September 17, 1946, he was the son of the late A. Z. Manin Bass and Elsie Leonard Bass. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Harrold Bass.

Sammy loved his Lord, his family and serving his country. He was a proud graduate of Red Oak High School, class of 1964. After graduation, Sammy went on to serve his country in the US Army as a military police officer from 1967-1969. During his tour in Vietnam he was awarded the "Soldier's Medal" for heroism. Sammy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Sammy leaves behind to cherish his memory, loving wife of 49 years, Emily Aycock Bass; daughter, Rhonda Bass Wainright and husband, David; and son, Jeff Bass and wife, Jill. He is also survived by four very special grandchildren, Samantha Wainright, Davis Wainright, Carli Bass and Collin Richardson; siblings, Margaret Bass, Steve Bass and wife, Pat, Jackie Bass Varnell and husband, Billy; many nieces and nephews; special family friends and co-workers.

A Celebration of Sammy's Life will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Phillip Barton officiating. Committal Service with full military honors will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home of Sammy and Emily.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dortches Baptist Church, 4776 Dortches Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or American Cancer Society, (for Lung Cancer and Agent Orange Research) 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
