Nash Health Care's Board of Commissioners have appointed Dr. Ian B. Buchanan, MD, MPH, as the interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Nash Health Care until a permanent CEO can be named.
Nash Health Care CEO Larry Chewning announced his retirement to the Board of Commissioners last month.
Sources reported that Chewning was asked to leave the hospital system but given the option to retire.
Chewning, who has served as CEO for 10 years, will officially begin his retirement in September.
According to Nash Health Care, a national search is underway to find a replacement for Chewning. That search is being led by a CEO Search Committee composed of members of the Board of Commissioners.
Buchanan has worked with the Nash Health Care leadership team on several initiatives related to the UNC Cancer Care at Nash program.
"In addition to the Cancer Care programs, I am excited to begin working more closely with the larger team at Nash and in getting to know both our patients and the community," Buchanan said.
Buchanan is a graduate of the UNC School of Medicine and earned his Master of Public Health from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
He first joined UNC Health Care in 2006, working in the Performance Improvement Department at UNC Medical Center, where he was responsible for the Core Measures reporting initiative. Since then, Buchanan has served as the Associate VP for Oncology Services, as VP for Cancer and Children's Services and as Vice Chair for Clinical Integration within the UNC Department of Pediatrics.
"Our team is looking forward to working with Dr. Buchanan and our partners at UNC Health Care to continue improving the care and service we provide to the people of Nash County and the region," said James M. Lilley, Chair of the Nash Health Care Board of Commissioners.
