Nash Central Middle School (NCMS) won the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools (NRMPS) Middle School Quiz Bowl event that was held on March 16, 2017 at the Booker T. Washington Theater in Rocky Mount. Southern Nash Middle School finished second in the competition and Edwards Middle School finished third. Quiz Bowl is an academic competition where teams compete in a head-to-head challenge to be the first team to answer various academic questions.
"Quiz Bowl is a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in healthy competition based on a series of questions related to various core content areas. The Quiz Bowl competitions are a great indication of the commitment of these students to academic success. The participants are to be commended for the time they have committed to preparing for the competition," stated Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Robin May.
The NRMPS Middle School Quiz Bowl consists of a fall and spring competition. All six middle schools compete in a round robin of head-to-head matches during both competitions. Each match consists of five students from each school who compete to answer a series of 12 toss up and bonus questions and points are awarded for correct answers.
The overall winner of the competition is the team with the highest total of points earned from both the fall and spring competitions. A Quiz Bowl trophy is also awarded for the most matches won in the fall and spring competitions combined. NCMS won the Quiz Bowl trophy this year in addition to their overall points win.
NCMS Quiz Bowl Team Coach Stephen Tobie shared his excitement regarding his team's win. "I am proud of my students and the hard work and dedication they put forth. How supportive they have been of each other as they prepared for this event was good to see. Our older participants helped the younger participants very much and I think all of the students gelled into a team that was great and effective," stated Tobie.
Tanya Byrd-Robinson, Advanced Programming Education Specialist and Quiz Bowl Coordinator, shared her thoughts on the event. "It is always exciting to see the kids enthused about competing. They work hard along with their coaches to prepare for the event. Today was an amazing day for all of our Middle School Quiz Bowl participants," she stated.
