The Town of Middlesex has fired its police chief, after he was charged with assaulting his girlfrield last week.
Authorities allege that William Dennis Murray, 43, went to the woman's Franklin County residence last Tuesday evening and assaulted her.
Nash County sheriff's deputies arrested Murray on March 15 and turned him over to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, which charged Murray with assault on a female and communicating threats, both misdemeanors.
Middlesex officials called an emergency meeting last Thursday to discuss Murray's arrest. Mayor LuHarvey Lewis said the meeting was called specifically to discuss Murray and lasted 15 to 20 minutes.
"It was something we had to address immediately," Lewis said.
The decision to terminate Murray was unanimous.
Lewis said the decision was based on Murray's recent charges but as well as an incident that happened last year.
"You reach a point where you have to make a decision where you have go in a different direction," Lewis said.
In February 2016, Murray and the town's Administrative Assistant Tammy Pittman were charged with cyberstalking. Those charges were later dropped.
Lewis said the board will probably have to meet again to discuss plans for the department during the absence of a police chief.
