Sorority celebrates 60 years
Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators, celebrated its 60th anniversary during the month of October.

Gamma Tau, the local chapter, celebrated Alpha Delta Kappa’s Founders’ Day at its October meeting. Barbie Creech of Cary, District VI vice-president, presented the program.

Kay Hargrove is president of Gamma Tau which awards the Mary Perry Scholarship annually. Other local projects include My Sister’s House, The Bassett Center and Relay for Life. The sisters also participate in state and national projects.

Alpha Delta Kappa was chartered in Jefferson City, Mo., and is now headquartered in Kansas City. The sorority promotes excellence in education and recognizes outstanding women educators.

In North Carolina, there are 102 active chapters with a membership of more than 3,000. Ruth Ann Griggs of Durham, an Alpha Mu, is the state president.

In 2007, the organization provided scholarships to worthy students and contributed to many altruistic projects. The state projects are the four Ronald McDonald houses and Camp Carefree. National projects include the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
