Eagles swim to states
ROCKY MOUNT -- Despite boasting a young roster, the Rocky Mount Academy swim team has enjoyed a strong 2012-13 campaign.

That season will be capped on Feb. 19 with a trip to Greensboro to participate in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1/2-A State Meet.

Six Eagles have qualified for the event:

• Claire Stanovich -- Girls 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free and 100 Butterfly
• Deanna Mayo -- Girls 50 Free, 100 Free and 100 Breaststroke
• Ashley Bissette -- Girls 50 Free and 100 Free
• Grace Cox -- Girls 50 Free
• Phillip Ward -- Boys 50 Free and 100 Free
• Doug Moore -- Boys 50 Free

Rocky Mount Academy did not have a senior swimmer this winter -- and just two juniors.

Still, the Eagles and Lady Eagles have been very competitive, especially Stanovich, Mayo and Ward.

As usual, Rocky Mount Academy undertook a difficult schedule, including meets against top area foes from Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash and Wilson Counties.

Monday, RMA took part in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference Swim Championships, which were held in Cary.
