Knights claim finale over Gryphons
RED OAK - No doubt Northern Nash point guard John Lucas has dished off many times to center Steven Baker for an easy basket.

But when they do and it comes as the winning score in a conference overtime game with your biggest rival on your home floor, then that's priceless.

That's exactly what the senior duo pulled off last Friday night to beat NEW 6 foe Rocky Mount 65-64 in the season's regular season finale and Senior Night for Knights.

Rocky Mount's Nick Hutcheson gave the Gryphons a 64-63 advantage on six-footer right of the lane with 11.2 seconds left. Northern, which had pushing the 10-second count virtually the entire fourth quarter when bringing the ball up court, got a break when RM's defense faltered and allowed Lucas and Baker to get free on a two-on-one break.

Lucas' pass over to Baker for the basket left 5.6 seconds on the clock for the Gryphons.

But RM's backcourt players fumbled the ball and had to hurry a pass down court. Montrell Battle's shot fell harmlessly short -- giving the Knights (8-15, 2-18) a NEW 6 sweep of the Gryphons (11-12, 3-7) -- their only league wins.

Brian Thomas led the Knights with 23 points. RM's freshman Tashawn Mabry paced the Gryphons with 19 before fouling out in the waning moments of regulation.

But the Gryphons did leave the gym with one win. The girls posted a 46-39 win over the Lady Knights - leaving Grover Battle's girls winless in league play. Rocky Mount's girls also sewed up the No. 2 playoff spot for the conference.

The Lady Knights (4-19, 0-10) squandered a 25-20 halftime lead in the game. Rocky Mount (14-9, 6-4) used a 15-3 run midway through the third quarter to begin turnaround.

Stephanie Allen and Arkaneisha Melton shared scoring honors for Rocky Mount with each one popping in 14 points.

Nikki Battle led Northern with 10 in the county rivalry matchup.
