Eleven drug dealers busted in Nash County
NASHVILLE - Eleven drug dealers have been taken off the streets in the past two weeks, thanks to combined efforts of local law enforcement in an undercover operation.

The investigation, led by the Nash County Sheriff's Department, has been ongoing for around four months. According to Lt. Scott Parker, the operation targeted street level drug dealers in several Nash County communities, including Spring Hope, Bailey, Middlesex and Rocky Mount. Undercover officers purchased crack cocaine and marijuana from each suspect. Parker added that each was also arrested separately instead of doing a roundup.

"We decided to go out and give each alleged suspect appropriate attention," Parker said. "The investigation is ongoing. We expect additional arrests."

During the arrests, several of the suspects had drugs on them. William Thomas Cherry, Jr., 23, of Battleboro was found with 3.3 grams of crack cocaine on him. In addition, Maurice Nicholson, 24 of Rocky Mount, was also found in possession of powder cocaine and marijuana. Shirley Parks, 43 of Spring Hope, was found in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine.

While attempting to arrest 22-year-old Deon Burgess of Spring Hope, Burgess fled and tossed out the marijuana he was in possession of.

The following suspects were arrested and charged:

* Forty-year old Allen Cox of Middlesex was arrested and charged with two counts of possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, two counts of sell and deliver marijuana and two counts of maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and storing a controlled substance. * Marcus Delanta Farmer, 27 of Spring Hope was charged with three counts of possession with the intent to sell and deliver cocaine and three counts of sell and deliver cocaine. Farmer was placed under a $15,000 secured bond.

Spring Hope's Police Department assisted in the investigation as did the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

"They played a vital role," Parker said.

Parker said arrests throughout Nash County will continue as the investigation is ongoing. As for the 11 already arrested, Parker is hopeful the courts will take them off the street.

"The problem is some of the people have been arrested before," Parker said. "(But) each one sold to an undercover officer so we feel like it's a very sound case. The investigation is definitely continuing."

"We're just going to keep on arresting them and we hope the court system handles the case appropriately," Parker added.

There needs to be a better way to keep drug dealers off the streets. All they get is a slap on the hand.
