Dorothy "Dot" McLawhorn Joyner

Dorothy "Dot" McLawhorn Joyner, 88 passed away on February 15, 2017, surrounded by her family. She loved her family greatly, enjoyed traveling and was happiest when she was outside whether it be working in her yard, sitting in the gazebo at the beach, or on the front porch at Autumn Care.

She was born in Pitt County to the late Eslie Burton and Ruby Evans McLawhorn on July 26, 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford E. "Bill" Joyner, and her brother, Ray McLawhorn.

Dot was owner of Joyner's Supermarket in Nashville for many years and had a previous career as store manager for the Mayfair Shop in Rocky Mount. She was a long time member of the Nashville United Methodist Church, Ladies Bible Class and former member of the Nashville BPW. While her children were growing up, she was involved in class activities and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. Dot was instrumental in spearheading the founding of Nash Recreation. Later, she delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins for many years.

Dot is survived by her sons Cliff Joyner, John Joyner (Ana) and daughter Pam Joyner; grandchildren, Abbie Joyner, Corrie Joyner, Lauren Joyner and Zach Joyner; sisters Mavis Manning and Helen Wooten; brother Ralph McLawhorn; sister-in-law Sybil McLawhorn; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family thanks all the nurses and staff at Autumn Care of Nash for Dot's loving care over the past six and a half years. In addition, the family is also grateful for the support and friendship of other Autumn Care residents and their families. Everyone will miss seeing Dot rolling down the halls, her "heys", and her beautiful spirit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nashville United Methodist Church, 209 East Washington Street, Nashville, NC 27856 or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Cornerstone Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Nashville United Methodist Church with Rev. Ralph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
